What is biting me?!?!

Apologies, this is probably the wrong thread.
I’m looking for answers to what is biting me at night?!

We’ve been waking up with bites for a good few months now. I didn’t think much of it at first, because it was pretty sporadically and not uncommon for the time of year. But, it’s becoming more regular, with both my partner and I waking up with new bites almost every day.

Googling suggests bed bugs. However, there are no spots on the mattress, no blood stains, and I’ve looked as throughly as possible at the mattress - every crevice, sides, under it, at the bed frame, headboard etc. I can’t see any physical signs of them.
The biting patterns are confusing me. I’ve had a few bites in a row (common for bed bugs), but also a lot of single bites. I had a solo bite on my back, yesterday. Today, I woke up with one on my shin, just above the ankle, and one on my calf on the other leg.

If it isn’t bed bugs, what else could it be? I don't have a pet so I doubt it’s fleas. It’s January, so surely it couldn’t be mosquitos. It’s driving me demented, I just need to know what it is!!

Do you live near squirrels and trees? Our last house had a flea infestation and we were convinced it was the wildlife. Our garden was next to woodland and had squirrels in the garden.

Had no pets!

It was so random but Indorex sorted it out

Have you woken in the night and checked for bugs? Bed bugs are visible when they come out to feed, you can see them on your sheets, or even you…

Did you move into a house where a previous occupant kept a cat? Flea eggs can hatch ages after the cat leaves and then when they can’t find the cat to feed on they come for you.

HI op, I have spots and rashes all over my boobs, I never had it before. And it drives me nuts. It's not fleas either as we dont have pets and I am actually now considering a new mattress even though I have never seen bed bugs.
Just wondering if there are other types of bugs or mites etc that are common in a house. Our home is fairly clean though. So following this thread for sure.

Get some Indorex from Amazon and do the whole house. Could be fleas, they lay dormant and hatch again. Blerk!

Hi everyone. Thanks for taking the time to reply!

@autismandgin - I actually live opposite a church with a large grounds, and there’s a lot of trees and wildlife. Haven’t seen any squirrels near the house though! I’ll consider fleas an option, if you can get them without having a pet.

@StrifeOfBath - No, I haven’t. I will check tonight! No previous cats in this house. My mum does have a dog, which has been in the house before. I don’t think she’s had fleas before.

@PopsicleHustler I feel your pain. Is it bites or a rash? I wouldn’t throw out the mattress, as from my extensive googling as that doesn’t solve a bed big problem. I’ve also been trying to find out if there’s anything other than bed bugs, fleas and mosquitos. There’s not much information on anything else!

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor cheers! Going to order this immediately

Dd always seems to get this. I'm honestly not sure as it does and goes so not consistent enough to be bed bugs or fleas and no one else gets bitten. Never solved it

It could still be midges/ mosquitoes... it's not been cold enough to kill them all yet. I'm in NE Scotland and still getting them.

This is one of my theories. I wonder if when they hearing is on it reactivates some of them

Clean all bedding, hoover the mattress and spray with an antibacterial spray. If this doesn't work then it may not even be bites.

I had trouble with itchy bumps that weren't bites - they didn't have a pattern and didn't have a puncture hole.
I ended up taking antihistamines for a while and touch wood it's OK now.

Also applying hydrocortisone cream to the affected area should help relive the itchiness.

Hope you get it sorted, it's a nightmare.

autismandgin · 03/01/2022 13:27

You can definitely get fleas without having a pet! Eggs can lay dormant for ages! That’s exactly what happened to us.
