Lips turning blue. What can this be?

It's only happened twice, when ds1 has got out of the bath and being dried.
Just wondered if this had happened to anyone else and why it's happened. In the space of about 5 mins max,his lips are back to their normal colour.

aha
I know the answer

He is cold

This is how I found mn - we were on our way to a wedding and dd's lips turned blue, then her cheeks. I had been running around a lot and was hot but she was just sitting on the floor and had got cold without me noticing

I frantically googled it and found mn, posted a msg and got 10 replies in 2 mins. That was in 2003 and here I am, still...

Thanks.

I did also think that, especially after just getting out the bath but our house isn't freezing and it doesn't happen to the rest of us.Only my mum had me worried earlier, saying I should take him to our gp as it can be a sign of heart problems.I'm sure you're right though.

My ds gets blue lips when he goes swimming, and a blue bit between his nose and mouth. I thought is was a latent heart problem as well, and suffered low level stress about it until I went ot he GP, but the Dr said he is just very thin and has very little fat on his body. Phew!

CarGirl · 22/12/2007 20:05

my dd got this until she turned 4 she obviously had an immature internal thermostat - she used to go bright red when too hot and get blue lips when she got very cold. She does seem to have grown out of it now though I think it peaked when she was 2-3

bubbaloo, their bodies arent v good at regulating temp for a fair while... and even if is not happening to you all, it could still be that he is cold.

do you run the bath warm enough? how long does he sit in it? is there any kind of draft on him (ie bathroom door open, whereas it would be shut when youre in there)?

as well as being a sign of just being cold, blue lips can also be a sign of fever

Bubbaloo · 22/12/2007 21:02

Thanks all.
He actually has a cough and cold at the moment so I suppose that doesn't help either. He is also quite thin,so doesn't take after me and yes,he is in the bath for quite a while as ne never wants to get out.He also has the bathroom door open, whereas we have it closed when we're in the bath.Luckily it's only his lips-his tongue has been fine,so I guess I should start getting him out of the bath sooner and stop him bouncing up and down on the bed with no clothes on,when I'm trying to get him dressed, afterwards.

Ours too! DS keeps telling us everyday that its christmas time, and won't hear that it isn't actually xmas day yet. If its anything like his first birthday he'll forget all about it the actual morning of xmas!
