large lump and red patch at site of injection, should I worry?

DD, 15mnths, had 2 injections yesterday and one of the sites is causing me to worry. There is a red patch about 5cms across and 3cms up with quite a big lump in the middle (well, bigger than the usual pea sized lump they warn you of). The area is hot to touch and very sore.
I rang my HV earlier who said 'to give 6 hourly calpol to keep the heat away and rub with ice'. I have used a cold compress on it, but not ice, and have given her ibuprofen instead of calpol because the area is quite swollen.

Help, I'm worried sick (of course I am, I'm a mother) anyone know what is causing this and am I doing enough?

sometimes they get irritation around the inj site. Draw a line around the edge of the redness and keep an eye on it. brufen is better for this pain. If she becomes unwell go to walk in centre or A&E.

Meant to say about the line drawing, you can then see if it gets any bigger, sometimes it is hard to remember how big it is.

Thanks, good tip, I'll do that now.

DD got a huge hard red lump around her MMR site .. it was about the size of a 50p piece IIRC

gave her calpol / ibuprofen but never rubbed it with ice though .. took a couple of days

dont' worry

This happened to my dd - it was severe and extensive. Agree with all Lulumama says. Also need to know which inj went in which leg as this could be a localised reaction to a particular vaccine necesitating a different (eg acellular) vaccine next time. DD reacted we think, to whooping cough vaccine and was subsequently given an acellular vaccine (though think they are all acellular nowadays). Get in checked in the morning if you are worried. HTH

Thanks, huge sigh of relief coming from this way

Not sure which went into which leg, either MMR or Pneumococcal.

mummyofgirls, thanks for thinking I was lulumama, wish I had that much experience !

I remember DD2's leg flaring up like this with pre-school boosters, but I can't remember which it was; I think she had MMR then for the first time (this was 1989) and she also had a DT booster (DPT without the whooping cough, because she'd had a reaction to the 1st part aged 3 months or whatever she was at the time & GP decided she shouldn't have it again)

So not much help but I don't think we did anythingabout it, and it went down after a while. I think it's quite normal.

HTH

My son had a huge reaction to an injection once, the swelling got bigger and redder and I was really worried but it went after a couple of days. He's had all the injection offered but it was just one (pre-school booster I think) that had this effect. I think it is considered "normal" but I agree, worrying for you.

Thanks for all of your advice x
