Sudden sore neck with temperature - when to be worried?

Bocohohoho · 21/12/2007 16:10

Dd (nearly 3) has been absolutely fine and full of beans all day, then after her swimming lesson she fell asleep very quickly, had a high temperature, woke up and was sick once, had a bit of diarrhea is pale and shaky. Now she's crying and saying she has a sore neck - right at the back though. She can move her head normally, but keeps wandering about crying and saying it hurts.

I know sore necks are one of those things you listen to. Any idea what sore at the back could be?

(she's poorly, but not floppy and listless and emergency doctor panic rush style atm)

I think I would take her to the doc Boco - if only because it's Friday and if it gets any worse, it's going to be hard to get her seen anywhere other than A&E. I'm sure the doc won't mind with a sore neck issue. (Is she OK with bright lights or is that a different illness? )

Maybe it would be wise to call NHS Direct to see what they think.

Bocohohoho · 21/12/2007 16:15

The dr would laugh though surely? Bright lights fine. She's just asked for blueberries so she's not even feeling too sick anymore. It's just the weirdy neck thing.

Maybe NHS direct - but they always tell you to see a doctor anyway don't they, if it's anything at all.

No dp for a couple of hours so can't get to the surgery.

Our doc, as a check, asked my DD if she could kiss her knee - not definitive I know but...can lil Boco?

MegaLegs · 21/12/2007 16:17

Oh Boco - DS1 did this to me yesterday, came out of school in tears with a bad headache and a pain all the way down his neck and spine. Phoned GP and got appointment with nurse practitioner. She checked him over but did get our GP in just to make sure he was ok. Today he has high temp, aches all over and is snotty so it seems to be flu. Can you get a last min appointment with GP. I was scared but he is ok today.

Bocohohoho · 21/12/2007 16:19

She said 'but I don't love my knee today!' and I had to say 'pretend you do' and she said 'ooohhhhh why?, I love my foot.' And kissed her foot so i'm guessing that covers it.

Oh Megalegs it does sound the same - she has pain in the same place, and is achey and snotty. I have flu too, so reckon it's the same. Necks just make alarm bells ring don't they.

The nurse asked DS1 to touch his toes and he couldn't, that's when she went to get the GP and when I went cold and started jabbering.

ComeOVenReadyturkey · 21/12/2007 16:23

I was told the trick is to get them to put their chin on their chest. DS was like that last week and trhrew me into a panic, gp said he was ok, just coming down with a bug, he has been streaming with snot and a hacking cough, but is on the mend.

yulemoonfiend · 21/12/2007 16:23

boco if she can kiss her foot sounds promising. Phew.

It is not common for children to get flu, but if if symptoms suddenly become more severe, get medical opinion.
Other danger 'signs' Are her hands/feet cold to touch? Rash, obviously. If she loses interest, I mean totally glasses over, you know what I mean?

MegaLegs · 21/12/2007 16:23

Took ds2 and 3 into school and popped head around Year 3 class door to say DS1 wouldn't be in and his teacher said she'd add him to the list. Only 18 in today out of the usual 30.

MegaLegs · 21/12/2007 16:30

Hope she's ok Boco. Must go and tend to my lot now.

Bocohohoho · 21/12/2007 16:33

Thanks

How are things with you Boco? DS1 is really hot and now he says his neck aches. Oh I hate this, half the class have the same, I am sure it's just a virus but I am such a worry guts. DH has gone out for more Calpol.

MegaLegs · 21/12/2007 20:03

He has not got a rash but I wouldn't know where to look. If it was the worse case scenario and he had menengitis where would the rash appear first?

Bocohohoho · 21/12/2007 20:04

Dd looks awful - her temperature has gone right up again, she's all glassy eyed and drunk looking. She wouldn't eat anything at all and just had a bit of juice then went to bed. She's go that real glazed eyed look. I really hope she's not sick in the night.

Hope you have a peaceful night with your ds1 Mega.

I don't know Mega.

Have you got some nurofen?

reikizen · 21/12/2007 20:09

A nurse once told me that by the time the sore neck stage is reached the child is seriously ill, so it's kind of a red herring symptom I think.

MegaLegs · 21/12/2007 20:12

He's hot and glassy eyed but very with it. Chatting to me. He now feels sick and has a bowl. I'm running a bath for him. Not a cold one or anything but it's bright in the bathroom so I can check him out for any signs of a rash and also light sensitivity.

foxy - I have nurofen but he has asthma - he has been ok taking it in the past but last night it made him wheezy so I think I should avoid it. He had last dose of Calpol at 6.30 so can't have more yet. Have the 6+ now though so a better dose for him later.

foxinsocks · 21/12/2007 20:14

poor boy. I hope all the little ones get better soon. It's awful when they get hit with these vicious bugs.

MegaLegs · 21/12/2007 20:38

The bath has helped. He's much cooler and tucked up in bed. Hope he'll sleep now. My next worry is that the others will all get it for Christmas. Lot's of VitC, Zinc and echinacea all round I reckon.
