'severe overbite'.......to brace or not to brace? Any experiences?

DD2 aged 7 has just returned fron the dentist re. a dodgy tooth.

Whilst there [the new] dentist made quite an issue about her overbite.

She is a thumb sucker...we knew she may need a brace when older.

Dentist appeared to be quite concerened and suggested the need for attention now!

Both my sd had braces when mid teens, 7 seems quite young?

I'm sure that's too young - my dentist has mentioned that both my dd's may need a bit of attention at some point as we have quite small mouthes - but she said we wouldn't even think of it for a couple of years and dd1 is 9! There's such a lot of growing to do - doesn't inspire confidence in your new dentist tbh.

Our dentist has just referred Ds1 (8) for his overbite - she said it was best to get going with it as waiting lists could be very long.

thanks

He comes from Switzerland...apparently they start them early there!

Perhaps he means a removable brace...i cannot remember what they are called..

Our dentist refers at about 10yrs so they are in the "system" as it were, the orthodontist is currently taking moulds of DDs teeth, but hopefully will discharge her without any intervention as her mouth seems to be sorting itself out.

It has made me feel a little sad tbh

dd has a beautiful little face, full of cheekiness, we love her overbite...

and she has never questioned it.

I have told her in the past that sucking her thumb might mean she may need a brace one day and it was never an issue.

Now she is all questions and looking at her teeth in the mirror

thanks for your responses

Interesting to read what ages other people dc are being reffered.

We are almost 100% certain that Dd2 will need braces on the top and bottom.

She is just 8 and wants them now but we have been told she is too young. She hates it, gets called rabbit and goofy at school and has always got a sore lip where her teeth dig in to it.

FairyTaleOfNewYork · 21/12/2007 13:31

dd1 will probably need braces. she has inherited my big goofy teeth.

i think i would want her to have them younger than mid-teens. i had mine at 16-18yrs old, which was late, but i did like the smile for a while afterwatds, but couldnt get on with my retainer (removeable) so some of my teeth have shifted back

Perhaps younger is better then, nutcracker.

Tis funny, i was desperate for a brace when i was a teen, all my friends had them!

I had fixed braces, think I got them when I was about 12. I absolutly hated them but they did the job. I also failed to wear my retainer afterwards though and so one of mine has shifted.

We are between dentists again at the mo so I am going to have to sort it out soon.

TiStHeSeAsOnToBeTaLcY · 21/12/2007 13:36

lol lennygirl

MIL's friend has just had braces put on, fairy, and she is 60 something!

you can get coloured elatic bands now.

That must soften the blow, surely

dd has cheered up a bit now....

we shall continue down the referral route and see what happens

thanks

i mwet a aldy at the hospital last month who had braces and she was in her 50's as well. she was brushing her tooth at the sinks. she thought she should explain why she was doing it.

i remember being searched at work (shop work, random searches periodically, not becuase i was dodgey) and ihad a toothbrush and toothpaste in a washbag in my bag, and my supervisior looked at me strnagely, untill i said i needed them because of the braces. i dont think that was the strangest thing they ever found though.

The dentist said that my dd (7) would almost certainly need braces because of over-crowding but would wait til all her big teeth were in - about 12. But then for over-crowding that would make more sense I guess?

My sdd didn't have hers til she was about 15 but they look fab now.

My friend had hers as a teenager but then didn't wear her retainer at night and they all went back and she had to have it done again as an adult and it cost her about £4k! She has a permanent band behind them now so it won't happen again.

AMerryScot · 21/12/2007 14:50

I had full train tracks fitted when I was 38! They weren't a problem - they made me feel a bit younger

I have a bonded retainer, so not teeth shifting post brace. I don't know why this is not the standard in the UK - it's just a little bit of wire.
