Anyone had physio for post-pregnancy SPD?

If so, what did they do and did it fix your fiery fanjo?

Gave in and went to doc about it this week (DS now 5 months) and her theory is that I did too much in pregnancy and properly buggered the cartilage , then started it all off again doing kickboxing (you lot did suggest it might be a bit much but I did it anyway ... but I really am quite fat ... it was necessary!)

Apparently I have a high pain threshold ( - I nearly jumped off the table when she stabbed at my ladyparts) so I've probably been merrily clambering and twisting and kicking my poor pelvis out of place.

Physio appointment is pending - but I go back to my (physical) job in a month, what can I expect and will I be better sharpish?

It depends what the physio finds, I would think. If you're mis-aligned, they might do some manipulation, and you'll probably have some repetetive pilates-style exercises to build up the right supporting muscles.

I've had electro-magnetic treatment before now, when the pain was really bad, but I haven't had that for a long while now.

Thanks, Sue. I'm a bit bugged that it's come to this (was hoping it would be baby then hey presto! pain gone. But I still clunk.

My pelvis was mis-aligned after having my DS. I had 6 weeks of physio (but I could barely walk and was in agony). The physio was very gentle and gave me pilates style exercises to do two or three times a day. It made a huge difference.

She tried to get me to walk with a stick it was that bad, but I refused! After all, how was I supposed to carry DS and use a stick/crutch

Hey now now mishy, it's amazing what you can do with crutches!

Chubby - if they give you exercises, be really diligent with them, they will really help.

Hi Sue - if only I had known that then! I just hope that if/when we have another I don't have the same problem, I will definitely not hesitate to take the crutch!

I had spd both times worse after birth r sacro iliac joint buggered,
last 6 weeks I have had prolapsed disc
am seeing chiopractor who pops be back in to alignment and physio for core exercises
they are wonderful and I am poor ££but improving
have mil coming sunday and dust is mounting no cleaner
hubby and kids switched off into xmas mode
any advice???

Get crutches from physio. Beat DH and children into submission using crutch. Delegate.

I've got SPD, and ds2 is 8mths old. Lovely clicking noises when I've been in position for too long

Physio told me that bf can play a part, because the hormones are still running around which can affect the ligaments.

She gave me some fab exercises which I can feel are actually starting to work. My next appt is in 2 weeks.

She also recommended pilates or yoga.

Pilates I looked into but £45 for 6 sessions and can't spare that much from budget [barefoot emoticon] ... thought about getting a DVD but suspect my posture would be all out without someone correcting it and render it pointless. Hmm.

Do you have a local leisure centre?

Mine runs a weekly class for a few quid, then once you know the right positions, then you could get a DVD.

Thats what I'm hoping to do

If you are in London I would heartily recommend the British School of Osteopathy in Borough High Street, where they run a wonderful expectant mothers clinic (also for new mothers). My pelvis went totally out of alignment after dd1 (over 9lbs) and midway through pregnancy with dd2 it all slipped out again - could hardly walk. They sorted me out and I went on to have ds and dd3 with ease! This was all some years ago but I note from their website that they are still there and it was very reasonably priced - esp compared to private osteopathy.

Many of my physio exercises are pilates based anyway - once you have those basic postures, a dvd should be ok to build on the basics.

runnyhabbit, we chose not to BF my last baby because of the hormone issue, and my recovery has been better than the last times. But I have had it very severely (wheelchair user at one point), and I truly hope none of you lovely ladies has to deal with that.

Wanted to bump this as finally I have been properly diagnosed (thus far herniated disc, groin strain, trapped nerve... All wrong) spent one hr with lovely proper physio who said iliac and symphysis pubis are MIS aligned. Am in constant ripping agony can barely stand. On crutches when not carting ds2 10mths around. Had spd in pregnancy bad at 4 -6 mths but good osteo sorted it. So went into good hard exercise 9 wk post natal and bam. Am on twice weekly phsio now. Am wondering how long it will take to fix? Am still bf ds2 and physio said stopping now would be a bit closing door after horse had bolted. Am relieved to have proper dx. Bit in so much pain. Groin knee whole leg.

I feel for you Piffle. Like SueBaroo I was wheel chair bound with SPD at one point.

I had physio for eight or nine months following birth and that, combined with a trip to the chiropractor helped massively. I handed my crutches back to the physio when DD was nine months old. The physio was against me seeing a chiropractor, but it was the best thing I've ever done. I went in on crutches and walked out carrying them.

I still get twinges now - usually the week before and during my period.

tbh it is just a releif knowing that I have the correct diagnosis and knowing how to alleviate symptoms,
FFS the dr had been telling me for 5 mths, walk it off walk it off.
I intend on using pilates when I am able, and seeing physio as often as needed. I hav NHS physio too but not often enough for progress. The osteo honestly said, better off with rehab physio, but to come back when your spd is sorted and she'll make sure everything else is trim.
The physio said she will be able to manipulate when I am not in so much pain.
Today is not so bad, I think the sense futility I had and bordering on depression as well, that has lifeted a bit as I feel finally I cna do something.

It can be depressing and because it's not visible people forget about it and that can get you down too. Just keep going - you sound like you've got some great support there.
