I'm in SEVERE PAIN TED

EffiePerine · 21/12/2007 09:24

Ears blocked, nurse tried syringing and now one side is deaf and really really painful . GP said no sign of infection and gave me some pink pills for the pain and inflammation which are doing sod all.

Is there anything else I can do? Am still putting drops in and swearing and stomping a fair amount. Feels like someone is drilling into my ear.

ouch ouch ouch

Who is Ted?

Poor you. I'm not sure syringing is a good idea when your ears are that sore (or were they not sore before syringing?).

Have you got something warm you can hold on your ear (like a hot water bottle)?

loopylou6 · 21/12/2007 09:28

if its that painful i would be inclined to think there is an infection there, i would demand antibiotics

EffiePerine · 21/12/2007 09:29

sorry, random Father Ted reference - one of my favourite scenes where Dougal is holding the teapot (well, put it DOWN, Dougal)

he looked and no sign - the ear isn;t hot and there is no discharge. I think it's just my crappy ear canals

lol you're delirious woman

straight to bed with you

that amount of pain doesn't sound right but then again, ears are blardy painful things when they go wrong

What drops are you putting in (are they the ones that soften wax)? Unless they are antibiotic types, I wouldn't put anything in it at all when it's this sore.

Myrrhcy · 21/12/2007 09:32

Anti-histamines can sometimes help with a blocked ear/deafness. Have a word with your pharmacist.

What are the pink pills? Have you just started taking them?

EffiePerine · 21/12/2007 09:32

sodium bicarb - they don;t make it any worse at least. Am at work so will be delerious here instead (and eat all the choc people have brought in)

hmm im not sure then, sometimes my hubby sufers with terrible ear pain, the doc has told him its muscular

EffiePerine · 21/12/2007 09:34

antiinflammatories, can't remember what they are called but they are pink and triagular. I think they are a stronger form of ibuprofen (I can only take them twice a day). I might try topping up with paracetemol (and chocolate)

Myrrhcy · 21/12/2007 09:40

Hope you manage to get through the day.

I hate it when my ears are affected.

foxinsocks · 21/12/2007 09:42

are they the voltarol pills (can't remember if volatarol is their proper name)? they once gave those to me when I had tonsilitis and they did absolutely nowt.

I would check if your doctor is open on Monday in case you need to go back!

EffiePerine · 21/12/2007 09:47

that's it, VOLTAROL. Sounds like a sci-fi character. If things don;t improve I will be back on the bog-standard ibuprofen which actually worked.

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 21/12/2007 09:50

I don't know why they prescribe those. They gave them to me with dire warnings about only taking one or two and how strong they were and even the max dose did nothing.

Nurofen worked much better in the end.

EffiePerine · 21/12/2007 09:51

that's v useful, I will go back to Morrison's ibuprofen. I wondered last night when they took from 7pm to 2am to actually kick in

try putting warm olive oil in you ear morning and evening, it will soften any wax that is there and hopefully it will move out of the ear canal itself

foxinsocks · 21/12/2007 10:02

That voltarol certainly did nothing for me (I know it's prescribed for arthritis and bone pain etc.). I'm not sure it works on every sort of pain?

Anyway, GO HOME if you can. Don't sit at work if you're feelign miserable.

ImBarryScott · 21/12/2007 10:02

Poor Dougal
hope you find something that does the trick

EffiePerine · 21/12/2007 10:04

Have taken paracetemol as well, will see if it helps. We're short staffed today so no chance of going home, I'm afraid. Anyway, lying down makes it worse and it's strangely peaceful here without a 14 month old clinging to my knees

Hi, Really sorry to interupt your conversation but ear problems are one of my specialist subjects so this thread caught my eye Have a hold host of illnesses so thought I would try and put some of my knowledge to good use.

IMO to much information can be counter productive and scare people unnecessarily so will not go into to much detail about my own problems.

The pain your experiencing could be caused by a blocked eustachian tube and/or sinusitis (I think they call it a referred pain) so I would try steam inhalation and decongestants as well as pain relief. Personally I would go back to GP if it doesn't settle down or if the pain moves to behind the ear and this area becomes red.

Sadly I know the damage repeated infections can cause.

EffiePerine · 21/12/2007 11:31

Thanks MA: will try decongestants as well (I'd neck some of DS's Medised but it tastes vile). Anyway, pink pills have kicked in so am deaf but pain free

OP posts:
singyswife · 21/12/2007 11:33

Would defo agree with the steam inhalation. Hurts like hell when you blow your nose but works in the long term. Hope you feel better soon there is nothing worse than earache.
