<<Very forlorn hope>> Does anyone know anything about immune problems in a specific area?

DH saw the consultant today & the chest infections he has are nothing to do with his asthma

So either

a) He has very bad luck and just gets chest infections

or

b) He has a problem with the immune system in his lungs

So we are off to Papworth to the 'Lung Defense Clinic'

& I just wondered .......

Jan de Vries has numerous books on health (inc immunity, asthma etc) where he presents alternative but sound nutritional approaches. You could maybe consider that as a support to orthodox treatment. Even asthma can be helped by the diet.
Unfortunately antibiotics depress immune system in long run.
I am at the moment working through immunity issues in my son using diet, some supplements and also homeopathy. For me the important thing is to keep chemical drugs to minimum to protect the liver.

I might research 'Jan de Vries'

Yes. I had numerous asthma attacks, all instigated by chest infections. Something like 30 admissions in 3 years and numerous courses of IV antibiotics. Eventually I had a bronchoscopy which revealed all kinds of odd, unusual and rare bugs.

I was then referred to a 'Lung Defence' team, where they took endless vials of blood, and a very thorough history. Eventually we had the results back - I have a problem with my immune system which means that I cannot make antibodies against certain types of bacteria, most of which are the sort responsible for chest infections! I instantly started antibiotics every day, and also was taught various physiotherapy techniques to keep my chest clear.

Although this helped, it didn't really help enough. Eventually I started receiving intravenous infusions of immunoglobulin (essentially other people's antibodies!) every three weeks, and that has made a huge difference to me. No admissions in two years (wow!), and only about 4 extra courses of antibiotics in a year, although I still take my daily antibiotics.

If you want any further information, the Primary Immunodeficiency Association has a very good messageboard, busy with people who know a lot more about this type of problem and the various treatments available. Most people are diagnosed as adults, and mainly through (I think) recurrent chest infections. You can find the messageboard here: www.pia.org.uk/forum99849144/list.php?1

Good luck!
xx

p.s. This sort of disorder is extremely rare, so afraid statistically it is probably more likely to be bad luck. Papworth will certainly sort you out, however, so try not to worry.

That is really interesting oxcat, I will have a look at that website

Compared to you DH isn't that bad - & I am glad you are dealing with it better now

I guess it is just bad luck - but I do want to be sure
