or anyone else for that matter. LO needs lymph node biopsy. How long did procedure last for your LO and how old was he at the time? How long do they have to do nil by mouth?

Am dreading this so any advice or info most welcome.

lyndyloo, why is he needing a biopsy, why do the docs think his lymph nodes are suspicious? where are the nodes located?

lyndyloo · 20/12/2007 20:11

In neck. She has had one largish one since when she was around 7 weeks old on one side. They haven't gone up but haven't gone down but the fact they are still there means doc wants to know what they are. He isn't unduly worried but wants to cover all possiblities I think.

I am dreading the whole thing but at least feel we are doing something positive about it now. It has always been at the back of my mind.

my son has a fare few in his neck, they do go up and down, but are more up than down, apparently they can stretch, so once an infection has caused them to swell, they never go back to normal. Has your LO got any other signs of illness? eg weightloss, night sweats, lethargy?

deaconblue · 20/12/2007 20:27

I know exactly how you are feeling, it's all very scary. Ds had two operations in the end, one for the biopsy and to drain the huge lumps he had and a second one to redrain them a week later. The nil by mouth was grim tbh, so be prepared. He was only 15 months and I had to wake him at midnight to give him milk and then he was totally nil by mouth. The operation didn't take place until 3pm due to emergency surgery taking priority. For the second operation we stayed overnight the night before and were lucky enough to be first on the list so he was operated on at 8am. If you are given the choice I would def stay overnight before as I'm sure this is why we were seen earlier.

The procedure is about 30 minutes I think but it was about 1 1/2 hours each time from leaving him to being bleeped to go back for him. At the time they suspected lymphoma so scars etc were low on my priority list but once he'd had the all clear I started to worry about his scars but 6 months on he has a really thin neat line where the biopsy site was. We think it'll be really unnoticable when he's older.

THanks. Were you with DS when he was given anaesthetic? Did they inject or use mask?

Loopy - no other symptoms. Why do you ask?

becasue when i took my ds to the doc (a thousand times) with his swollen nodes, they never seemed to concerned because he was well in himself, eating properly and no lethargy etc

deaconblue · 20/12/2007 21:00

We chose to have the mask as he'd really suffered with "magic cream" not working properly before a blood test so I didn't want a canula going in his hand while he was awake. I cuddled him while they held the mask over his face and was able to give him a kiss before popping him onto a bed. It was traumatic for me but really for him it was over in seconds and he didn't seem distressed at all.
He was quite sick and sleepy afterwards but within a couple of hours seemed fine.
We had to stay in hospital for 5 days as he needed massive intravenous doses of anti-biotics but the little girl who was having a biopsy the same afternoon as ds went home that evening.

loopylou6 · 20/12/2007 21:00

they did measure the largest gland though and gave him antibiotics, then asked him back in a week to see if the AB's had shrunk the gland at all, (which it had slightly) hew as to and from the docs all the time, never had any tests though, did they measure your LO's offending neck gland?

lyndyloo · 20/12/2007 21:06

Doc measured gland just by feeling it, no ruler or anything. My LO also had abs but they had no effect. So next step was biopsy.

She had blood tests with Ok results but unless glands removed they can't say for definate what it is. I ummed and arred about the surgery but he says it is a quick procedure. Be pleased when all over. Really scary.

Shoppingbags- how quick you get biopsy result?

OP posts:
deaconblue · 20/12/2007 21:09

the biopsy result which ruled out lymphoma and other life threatening stuff took two weeks as they had to grow cultures, although it was only two weeks ago (so 6 months after surgery) that we finally got a diagnosis of Atypical TB.

deaconblue · 20/12/2007 21:10

dh just got home after working away all week so am off now. Will check mumsnet tomorrow if you need to know anymore

lyndyloo · 20/12/2007 21:21

the kiss goodbye bit made me howl too. It seems a bit weird and final though of course they just mean til you see him in an hour. Ds fought the mask a bit but I just kept singing to him and he soon calmed down.

mydhislooooooaded · 21/12/2007 15:02
