Burning pain in rib cage/upper back

On a few occasions now I have felt burning pain start in my upper back in the evenings which progressively gets worse. If I take an ibuprofen and 2 cocodamol 30/500 I can eventually drift of to sleep and it's gone in the morning.

I have a 2 month old baby so each time it's happened I've put it down to rocking/feeding the baby or wearing her in a carrier, and have been very mindful to stop things that I think might be causing it.

The last 2 days I've done none of those things excessively but the pain started about 10pm tonight. I've taken an ibuprofen and 2 cocodamol 30/500 yet the pain is still awful and I haven't slept a wink.

It's hard to describe whether it's just in my upper back or my ribcage but I think ribcage. It's a burning pain.

I was going to speak to my GP last week but because I don't have it every night I didn't like to. Of course now they're closed to Wednesday.

Has anyone had anything like this? I'm waiting on the water to heat up so I can have a bath and see if that helps. I can't take any more pain relief for 90mins and I have the baby and a 3 year old to be fit for tomorrow.

Call 111.
That’s always the first and best thing to do. No-one here should be giving out medical advice. This could be a number of things and 111 will help advise how soon it should be investigated.

That sounds very much like the pain I experienced with gallstones. I would absolutely persevere with a GP appointment as soon as you can.

If you get yellow mucous membranes then you need A&E.

In the meantime gaviscon may be your friend

@ThesecondLEM you might be spot on. I rang urgent care yesterday but was told I wasn't urgent. Had to battle to get a GP appointment today and she took one look at me and sent to A&E. looks like I'll be here for hours, it's packed.

Hope you are ok, did the gp have any suggestions of what it could be.

Nichola2310 · 29/12/2021 16:39

@KittenCatcher thank you, she thinks a gallbladder infection.

Oh dear that can be painful. You poor thing. I hope you get seen and start treatment soon.

Ouchie - do push for removal. In the mean time you need to seriously restrict your fat consumption. That was generally the only thing that helped while I was waiting to get my bastard thing out

@ThesecondLEM great news, it's out!!!! One particular surgeon who saw me wanted to take it out because of my age (late 30's). I'm so grateful as I know the hospital is completely overrun at the min but now I'm on the road to recovery.

Thanks again for helping me realise what was wrong.
