Should I be worried about this sore on my back?

Please can anyone who knows about skin cancer/moles advise me about this?

Yesterday in the shower I noticed my shower puff had scraped something on my back. Today I did it again and checked in the mirror when I found this. It's like a scab has been removed, but I'm worried it's a cancerous sore. I can't remember injuring it to cause a scab. Any advice much appreciated.

Do you have health anxiety? It's quite a leap to go from small grade on your back to cancerous sore!

Looks fine - although I'm not a GP. Just keep an eye on it. I'm sure it'll clear up soon

*graze

I get those, they just heal up. If it doesn’t heal, or looks weird after a few days, see a GP.

Maybe a little. Both of my parents have had cancer recently, one in chemo at the moment, so it's on my mind. I just can't think of how I'd have got a graze on my back.

I would ask the GP to look at it, just to be on the safe side. Not wanting to scare you, but my OH had a pre-cancerous lesion on his back and it did look quite similar. It was treated with some sort of light therapy (sorry, I can't remember the name of it) and it all healed up.

Palomadoves · 22/12/2021 23:16

Thank you Missing. Were the doctors very worried about it, if you don't mind me asking? Or is it something they see lots of? And did they give an idea of how likely the treatment was to work? Thank you for sharing.

I had something similar in the spring op. Sent a photograph to my GP who put me on the 2 week referral.list at the skin clinic. Seen within the week. It was a basal skincell carcinoma. Benign but needed to be removed. It was frozen off. It was nothing to worry about but needed to be dealt with. Send Yr Dr the picture you have taken here.

Hiya, I’ve had a really similar thing for years - I noticed it kept slightly scabbing and never completely healing. GP thought some kind of flat wart but referred me to dermatology and they’ve got me an appointment - it’s not until March so they obviously don’t think it’s an urgent thing but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a BCC (basal cell carcinoma) that they remove. BCCs are “technically” cancers but incredibly non invasive and slow growing and don’t spread, so they’re not classed as emergency cancers or worrisome if that makes sense. The lack of urgency from the dermatology clinic in my case is reassuring.

How long has it been there? I’d give it a week or so and if it’s not gone contact your GP.

Also is it slightly raised or more like you’ve taken the skin off the top? It’s hard to tell.

This is mine

@palomadoves It was a thing called Bowen's Disease. They weren't desperately worried because it's very slow-growing and doesn't spread. He was referred to Dermatology by the 2-week pathway anyway, just to be on the safe side. The treatment was called photodynamic therapy. He said it felt like bad sunburn when it was being done! but he's absolutely fine now. This was several years ago and there's no sign of it returning. I hope this reassures you a bit x
