Sickness bug

So my eldest was poorly for around 8 hours Sunday evening onto Monday. She was sick 5 times in total. Now my youngest has been the same since 2am. How quickly do you catch it from your children? First sickness bug and so close to Christmas I'm freaking out a little! Thanks x

Sickness bugs are the worst. Some households all get sick within days of eachother or weeks. And some do not catch them. In our house, the adults have never caught any sickness bugs (knock wood!) in the last 10 years having have 3 kids. Currently they are age 2-10. The kids passed it to eachother when younger....but now the older two do not pass it to eachother. When they were little it would be a week or even two weeks apart! IT was so annoying because then I would always worry until a month has gone by. We have not done anything really to avoid catching them, other then the usual handwashing and wiping areas with bleach or dettol. Even the adults who sat next to or slept with the child as they vomitted or cleaned up the vomit managed to escape it (knock wood!). It is either me, my husband or au pair....

Recently we had a week where DD(5) was sick on Sunday.
Nothing until I was sick on Thursday.
DS(2) was sick on Friday.
DH was sick on Saturday.

I don't know how you can maintain hygiene in those conditions, I was surrounded by piles of sicky washing while still feeling nauseous!

DS had a bug a couple of weeks ago. DD took about a week and a half before she seemed to catch it and is still suffering now. DH and I both caught DS first bug when he was little. It's hit and miss I think. Just lots of hand washing and cleaning up is all you can do, and hope for the best. Good luck!

I forgot to add that when my older two are sick, I make them stay in the bathroom for hours until they are done the vomitting stage, so they can be next to the toilet. They do not mind, as we can fit a small kids mattress in there (along with a small desk and chair, so its really like a small bedroom tbh!). But anyway, I make it cozy and comfortable, they get to watch ipad or read etc....whatever they want really. That helps contain the germs to one area....once they are done that phase, they can go to their bedroom and stay in there until they feel better. This does not always mean they dont catch it from each other though, as kids are germ machines. I am not sure how the adults manage to avoid it....even when cleaning up the vomit etc.

We have also managed to avoid colds/fevers etc most of the time...even when the youngest has literally coughed straight into my face/mouth!

When the older ones were little, I had no clue what to do when they vomited (growing up I never really got sick!). So I used to let them in the bed and they would be sick in the bed (disgusting and so much work!). I tried giving a plastic bag, but that did not work. Best idea is a bucket with a plastic bag, so its easy for them to hold, and you can jsut take the bag out. I would do this if we were not able to use the kids bathroom as what we call the panic station for when anyone is sick. My kids feel like they are treated like kings and Queens when they are sick (they have said this lol).

Apple cider vinegar and probiotics for you - really helps avoid it. I'm emetophobic so first signs of people being unwell near me and I take a tablespoon of virgin apple cider vinegar. I've found it really helps

I thought sick bugs lasted 24/48 hours? Just keep hand washing up and avoid going near bodily fluids as it’s often spread through breathing the bacteria in

Mamabear12 · 23/12/2021 07:58

Yes, they last usually that long, but someone can be contagious for like two weeks! AND who knows how long inccubation period is. My daughter took a sip of a drink from my son a few years ago. Later that night he was sick with a tummy bug and she did not get sick until 2 weeks after!

Another time they were a month apart. But that could have been two seperate ones caught at their school.

The last sickness bug that ripped through our house started with DS Sunday @2am. DD was sick Monday @10pm with DP sick aswell at the same time. I didn't catch it until 5 days later on the Saturday. That was our first time where we have all caught the same bug. Its usually only 1 or two of us and more than likely just the kids who catch it. I felt strange from the Tuesday afternoon so i knew it was coming, it just took a curry for it to defeat me!
