my dad uses that i think it is for his high blood pressure, but he also has heart problems so could be linked to that?

he does seem to be having a lot of side effects i.e. itching, memory loss, depression and generally just acting really strangly but he is on a lot of medication at the moment doesnt the label say anything about side effects?

Myrrhcy · 20/12/2007 11:01

Yes, I used to take it for high BP. I had no unpleasant side-effects - just felt calmer tbh which is a positive!

It's not actually recommended anymore to treat high BP (in the under 55's that is) and so I was taken off it.

CarmenerryChristmas · 20/12/2007 11:01

Dp has taken it for years but was taken off it, a new gp told him that it was a very old fashioned drug that was quite hard on the liver, he is now on ramapril which seems to be better.

nailpolish · 20/12/2007 11:04

hmm well i thought so, i thought betablockers where quite old fashioned

but anyway

im just worried as side effects can be anxiety, depression, lack of libido. dh is quite an anxious soul anyway

(carmene, is it not the kidneys, you siad liver...?)

micci - atenolol can be used for angina/tachycardia - its a beta blocker - maybe thats why your dad is on it

I went on it for a couple of months a couple of years ago when i was mega stressed whilst doing an assignment. I found it really helped my stress levels and had no side effects at all.

Myrrhcy · 20/12/2007 11:06

iirc, there is a risk of developing diabetes if used long term (is that kidney related?)

CarmenerryChristmas · 20/12/2007 11:06

No definitely the liver. The liver process all the drugs that go through your body and atenolol is quite hard on the liver apparently. I will ask dp more when he gets home.

nailpolish · 20/12/2007 11:06

yes thats right myrrhcy

it can damage kidneys long term in sure of it

OP posts:
nailpolish · 20/12/2007 11:07

carmenere maybe its both

micci25 · 20/12/2007 11:08

yeah he has angina he is on so many tablets i cant keep up with what they are all for! lol poor man! one of my dads medication seems to have caused him to be depressed but as i said he is on loads so it might not be the atenolol!

just keep an eye on your dh if he seems to be getting any bad side effects go back to gp to discuss them and he could change onto another?

nailpolish · 20/12/2007 11:10

or maybe its the high bp that affects the kidneys...

its a vicious circle!

micci, ill do that. there are so many bp drugs he oculd have another if needed

thanks

Just spoke to dp he said ask to change to ace inhibitors which are a much cleaner but nore expensive type of drug. He said Atenolol can effect kidney and circulation and he came off it because it increased his bilirubin count, which means the liver wasn't dealing with it too well.

nailpolish · 20/12/2007 11:14

thanks very much carmene
