Hi all. I went to see my dentist as an emergency for throbbing pain today. My first molar has a very deep filling which has worn down. I thought that was the cause.

She recommended I have that extracted which is booked for Xmas eve. Xmas ruined!

When she did X-ray she noted that I have a horizontally impacted wisdom tooth but said nothing else about it.
I’ve been given antibiotics to clear any infection but I’m concerned that pulling this first molar isn’t the best thing to do and that it’s the impacted wisdom tooth causing the pain.

I really don’t want an extraction of the wrong tooth the day before Xmas but it was a 2 month wait.
I don’t know what to do.

Im a dentist & its impossible to say without actually seeing you/radiographs but it sounds like the pain you are describing is caused by the heavily restored molar.

Like someone said further up, if the wisdom tooth is completely unerupted it is not likely to be this & just an incidental finding on xray

You are unlikely to find someone to take out an asymptomatic wisdom tooth even privately due to the risk of nerve damage (goes against NICE guidelines)

If you are unsure/concerned, ask the dentist to explain exactly why she thinks it is this tooth causing the issue, eg vitality testing, tender to percussion etc

Thank you sloth169.
Now the antibiotics are kicking in I can tell the pain is coming from further back in my jaw.
I’ve had multiple gum infections around those 2 molars, the pain is radiating all the way down to my front teeth and in the past few months one my front teeth have been shifting with one being pushed back.

I always thought the problem I had with that pushed back one was just gum irritation but maybe the impacted wisdom tooth is pushing my teeth down?
I will talk to my dentist on Friday. It could be I have multiple problems that have all appeared at once 🤦🏻‍♀️

I did go to hospital and had it done under GA, but I needed all 4 wisdom teeth out, plus another impacted molar that had never come through. My dentist referred me. As others have said, maybe have another chat to your dentist, update them on the other issues you have mentioned here, and ask them to explain more clearly why they think it is the molar, not the wisdom tooth. Sounds like the molar will need sorting out either way, so you could always get that done first then see if things settle down... Hope you feel better soon Flowers

Thank you.
I just want the pain to stop at this point. Knowing I have weeks at a minimum of this throbbing pain feels like a lifetime.
I’m on tramadol for another health condition so I have a built up tolerance to pain killers which isn’t helping me right now.

A horizontally impacted wisdom tooth which is not erupted into the mouth is very unlikely to cause you toothache.
A heavily restored molar close to the nerves is likely to cause toothache. I would opt for a root canal in your case and then you can see if the pain subsides or not after the first appointment. If it does, you know what the molar was the cause and you can choose to either continue with the root canal or have an extraction. This way you can identify the tooth and you won’t be losing a tooth unnecessarily if it wasn’t the molar. If you want to do that, call the dentist and advise them you have changed your mind and would like the first stage of a root canal in the appointment on Xmas eve instead.

I can pinpoint the pain to a very hard lump behind my last molar lower down the jaw. It feels like the tooth could be errupting there.

This pain is nothing like the sensitivity I’ve felt with prior broken teeth. This is worse into my jaw, cheek, ear and eye with facial swelling.
Just sick of it.
Thanks for all the advice. I’ll discuss with my dentist Friday. She did say wouldn’t expect the filled tooth to suddenly start hurting after being in for so long and that there was no sign of decay or infection pockets in that tooth on X-ray.
All confusing. Wanted to feel ok for Xmas but that’s not gonna happen.
