IBS - What the fuck is WRONG with me?!

My stomach for months now makes the most horrific noises. Farting noises, belching noises, door creaking noises, whale noises, just absolutely awful. For the record I'm not allergic or intolerant to anything and it doesn't matter what I eat or don't eat or cut out or don't cut out. NOTHING makes a difference. I'm just bloated and uncomfortable ALL the time as soon as I've eaten. No other symptoms. Doctor has put it down to stress because I've had a very hard couple of years. I just want it to go away, I'm developing a phobia or being around people because it's so loud and humiliating. It's destroying my working life. Probiotics have done nothing either. I am so, so unhappy 🙁

@Gladioli23 I've pm'd you with the link (several times it appears, it didn't look like the message was sending 🤦‍♀️).

I had symptoms like this and also some weight loss because it was too uncomfortable to eat. Really tough, they are miserable symptoms. For me the solution has been a wheat/gluten free diet. A high fibre diet would be the opposite of what has worked for me.

I would second the suggestions upthread to get this worked up/investigated further if possible. It was not certainly not 'stress' in my case, as I am far more stressed nowadays and have far fewer symptoms.

Got it, thank you!

Listen to the people on here that are telling you to push for further GI investigation.

Your symptoms sound significant, and shouldn’t be diagnosed as IBS without further investigation.

@Ginger1982

Please get checked out further. My DF was diagnosed with suspected IBS 26 years ago. Turned out they were wrong and it was something much more serious that killed him shortly thereafter.
Just out of curiosity can I ask what the condition was that ended his life? Did he have this on top of the IBS? 26 years is a long time to go undiagnosed with something which ended his life. I ask as I was diagnosed with IBS 24 years ago and often think it’s something else. My MIL was diagnosed with IBS which turned out to be something much more serious than IBS but that was just for a year before the actual disease progressed. 26 years seems a long time.
PAFMO · 27/12/2021 10:03

The poster said it was 26 years ago and he died shortly afterwards.

haba · 27/12/2021 10:40

@RedPandaWanda bowel cancer, in all likelihood.

OP, please do get it investigated further Thanks

@Yogateacherherehello could you tell me which style/branch of yoga you follow? Thanks

RedPandaWanda · 27/12/2021 11:05

Ahh, I misunderstood, I thought op meant he had lived with a diagnosis of IBS for 26 years and it was actually something more sinister!

Sorry, I wasn't clear. He was diagnosed 26 years ago with IBS. Turned out it was, in fact, bowel cancer and he died 4 months later.
Yogateacherherehello · 27/12/2021 13:43

@haba I teach and practice traditional hatha yoga, drawing heavily on the Gitananda lineage.

It's a particularly holistic style, as much about mental as physical health. 🙏

My dsis has suffered for years.

Peppermint capsules were her go to, but didn't eliminate the symptoms.

She's recently discovered digestive enzymes and says they're helping. Worth a try?

Blinkingbatshit · 27/12/2021 13:52

@Yogateacherherehello - is there any chance you might pm me that video link too? Been struggling for almost a year and really think something like this might help! Thanks!

RedPandaWanda · 27/12/2021 14:53

Ginger1982 I’m sorry that’s awful, the same things happened to my MIL.

Thank you. He was only 43 😢

As many others have said, there should be lots of tests to rule out other causes before giving a diagnosis of IBS.

My DS went to the GP years ago abs was diagnosed with IBS without other tests. I said many times he should go back but as he had a diagnosis he wouldn't.

It's only this year that we've realised that every food that triggers him has Sulphates in.

He's cut out the Sulphates and is 100% better.

If you haven't been to the Allergy Clinic and had a test for Coeliac, I would insist on both of these.

Poppy209 · 27/12/2021 16:35

Also look up Bile Acid Malabsorption…..often missed (and not well known by GPs) and symptoms often put down to IBS. A few different causes and not fully understood but can be caused by gall bladder removal. Diagnosed by a SECHAT scan and then controlled with meds / lo-fat diet. One of very many things it could be ;) Look after yourself!
