Any advice for relieving gastritis pain?

I'm currently having investigations to find out what's going on with my stomach but it's pretty much assumed to be gastritis and right now I'm in agony and feel like my stomach is on fire. Does anyone have any home remedies or tricks for easing the pain? I've already taken omeprazole.

Ask for esomeprazole instead and then peppermint water (not tea!)

TiddleTaddleTat · 20/12/2021 20:56

Buy some slippery elm capsules and take with every meal.
Marshmallow root tea.
Bland diet - remove acidic foods.
I had gastritis due to coeliac disease - once I worked this out and removed gluten and contamination the pain went.

Not a home remedy but gaviscon after a meal may help.

Co codamol is safe to take for the pain.
My dd gets this and can have this painkiller

Peppermint tea always settles my stomach.

Gaviscon advance was the only thing that really helped me and I had chronic gastritis, still get it now occasionally, on top of high dose lanzoprazole or omeprazole taken in divided doses, if I take it all on a morning by tea time I'm hurting so I have half AM and half PM.
Things that help - drinking lots of sweet green tea with a meal sweetened with honey not sugar.
Always keeping something on your tummy e.g bland crackers between meals.
Low fat
No tomatoes
No chocolate
Avoid garlic
Only very well cooked onion
Avoid fresh orange or strong orange juice

I took paracetamol aswell and used a hot water, although it didn’t take the pain away completely it eased it so it was somewhat bearable

I was wondering what the difference was between the two and if maybe the other would help? I don’t really feel the omeprazole does anything tbh

I'm already gluten free actually! Have been for many years. My coeliac test was negative but the gluten was killing me. The gastritis actually didn’t start until about 5 years after I went gluten free, so it's not gluten causing it. I'm not sure what is causing it. There doesn't seem to be any specific food.

I wasn't sure if I could take painkillers for it or if that would upset it more. Good to hear other people can. I'll start doing that. I can't take ibuprofen anyway so no NSAIDs, just paracetamol.

I've tried peppermint tea and it's just so disgusting I can't get it down. Sad

Peppermint tea or peppermint oil capsules.
Have you had a h.pylori test?
The problem with ppi medications like omeprazole etc is that you do need some stomach acid and ppis can lead you to have low stomach acid which has the same symptoms as high acid.

weaselwords · 21/12/2021 11:05

Lansoprazole did the trick for me, but before I got that I took lots of gaviscon and avoided acidic or spicy food. I couldn’t eat big meals either as that set it off too Lots of water and small amounts of bland food.

gothsnotmoths · 21/12/2021 11:06

Yes, my H Pylori test came back negative just last week. Booked in after Christmas to see what else the doctors can do about it.

Reducing stress has had the biggest impact. Mine started after losing both my parents very close together and has reappeared as I go towards my first Christmas without them.

gothsnotmoths · 21/12/2021 11:08

Stress does seem to be a factor but weirdly not extreme stress. Just daily stressful situations which are hard to remove.

Could it be an ulcer ?

I suppose I won't know until I see the doctor again.

I found certain foods were triggering the worst of the pain so I just used a process of elimination and a food diary to work them out.
Peppermint tea is the worst thing to have, mint should be avoided. Multiple people recommended it to me and I'm glad I didn't listen. It isn't a digestive issue.

Chocachocaholic · 28/12/2021 15:02

Omeprazole was a cure for my long term gastritis but I used pepto bismal for flare ups. It is horrible but worth it to take the pain away though, I used to get the most awful attacks in the middle of the night
