Large skin tag … should I try to get rid myself?

I am 37 weeks pregnant and since my 2nd trimester a skin tag on my leg has been growing … think from the size of a rice crispy to a large grape.
GP has assessed it and agrees it is a skin tag and nothing more serious.
I noticed yesterday it had started bleeding - it has never done this before. So contacted GP today and sent pictures and have been prescribed antibiotic cream, she seems to think it has become twisted and might be dying. She said if she were me and were brave, she would just snip it off.
Now it is quite big and at the minute painful, I definitely couldn’t cope snipping it off myself, but would you tie some string around it to help it on its way if it already seems to be dying? …
She has promised I can be referred to have it removed due to its size, location and the fact that is is sometimes painful (and now randomly bleeding!) once the baby is born, but I would love for it to be gone before then.
Has anyone got rid of their own skin tag? Is this one just too big?
Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated

I’d tie cotton tightly round the bottom and wait for it to drop off.

Crimsonbow · 20/12/2021 17:21

I tied the root of a similar sized one with dental floss then covered it with a big, padded plaster. It did come off eventually Envy (not envy!) has since grown back although smaller.

I did this for a tag that had grown large over 2 pregnancies. Tied cotton thread around it and kept tightening it over a week. It didn't drop off so I snipped the very tiny piece of skin that was still attached with a sharp pair of sterilised scissors and it bled a tiny bit and healed beautifully. Wasn't too painful.

I think yours is probably too big, but if you get smaller ones I’ve had success removing them with a) a kit you can buy on Amazon b) dabbing daily with tea tree oil

Joolsin · 20/12/2021 17:27

I would have tied it when it was rice krispie sized - would have been very easy then, but I'd still give it a go now. Maybe do a two-step procedure - first one not tied completely right to weaken it and make a bit of a "neck" on it. Then the second one should be the tight one.

Not big ones, but I cut mine off with nail clippers. Blush
I have a big one at the top of my thigh, but I'm not gonna take that one on

tenredthings · 20/12/2021 17:33

You can tie them off with a hair, if your hair is long enough !

User00000000 · 20/12/2021 17:37

I tied one off with thread and then stuck a plaster over it until it eventually dropped off. Smaller than yours though, about the size of a raisin.

ImStayingInside · 20/12/2021 17:38

@Joolsin see it didn’t bother me when it was small, I wish I’d known what it would end up like and I’d have definitely tackled it then.
I didn’t even know it was growing because I can’t see where is it cos of my bump, I just happened to realise it was sore one day in October and checked with a mirror and was horrified and it has continued to grow since then, except now I check it everyday!
I’m just scared of it bleeding a lot and me panicking cos I’m a wimp.

I think just putting tape over them to cut off their air supply is supposed to work.
Maybe that's warts, though?
They must be similar.

BusterGonad · 22/12/2021 14:43

Tie some Cotton around it, it doesn't hurt and it will drop off. No pain at all.

ImStayingInside · 22/12/2021 15:14

I’m actually really struggling with the pain from it and it has started to smell.
If it isn’t feeling any better tomorrow I am going to call the GP again, as I’m worried it is infected and I may need oral antibiotics as well as the cream.
What a nightmare 8 days before my baby will be arriving!

Why not call him today, just to give you the best possible chance?
It doesnt sound as if it's going away anytime soon, and the smelling isn't a good sign.
Also, it's on a tender area, near to other tender areas

ImStayingInside · 22/12/2021 16:03

@RobertSmithsLipstick I won’t get through now, I have to ring at 8am if I want to get an appointment 🙃

Oh, good, as long as you do get one.
A pharmacist is often as good or better to consult about these type of things.
They always seem to quite enjoy helping with something a bit different.

sleepyhoglet · 22/12/2021 19:45

I got some skin tag elastic band things from Amazon. It was basically dead and then I used a scalpel on the last little adjoining bit. So satisfying and had been in an awkward part of my body so was very glad to have gone!

ImStayingInside · 23/12/2021 11:12

GP gave me oral antibiotics today to try to clear any infection before my c section next week. So hopefully I see some improvement 🤞🏻
Once the baby is here I will definitely look at tying it off to get rid!
