Ear infection discharge!

Hi,

Just looking for some advice on ear infections, I'm out in Spain at the moment, coming back in 2 days so as you can imagine it's a nightmare (expense) trying to get a doctor.

I did actually see a doctor today who told me I have an ear infection and has given antibiotics. I had really bad pain since landing here and some deafness as well as being bunged up with cold/flu symptoms.

Since I took the anti-biotics 6 hours ago I have started having leakage from the ear, just some thin yellow/orange stuff and the pain has practically gone. Is this a good sign and means the infection is coming out? Or should I be worried as I am due to fly in less than 48 hours and I am dreading it SadConfused

It might mean your eardrum has burst. I had a horrible ear infection last year the pain was awful, after a couple of days it started discharging horrible green fluid as my drum had burst. The pain was much better after that. It depends if your infection was middle ear (behind the ear drum), or outer ear.

My eardrum ruptured a few years ago and I was told not to fly for four months after it happened. However, when mine burst, there was clear liquid but also blood so it could have been a different part of the ear.

@Splodgerbodgerbadger it's middle ear, the discharge is a sort of golden colour. I'm hoping it doesn't hurt when I fly Sad

@Dancingonmoonlight I wonder if mine had burst, obviously don't have the option not to fly for 4 months as I need to get home. I did read online it is less painful to fly once burst as the ear can actually equalise the pressure better...

Remember to keep it dry too. Use cotton wool to keep it dry when showering and no swimming either as its particularly easy to get an infection now.

@Dancingonmoonlight thanks! I've only been in the sea once since I got here and only to waist height. Been trying to avoid it in the shower too. Just my luck I got a super powerful shower here cause normally they're rubbish Grin covid test to fly home today, let's hope that's bloody negative, I can't be stuck out here with this any longer. Sad

Oh dear.
I hope you feel ok in a couple of days. How long do you have to self isolate in Spain?
If I was stuck in Spain for Christmas I'd embrace it and soak up some sun, enjoy walking on the beach, eat tapas, shop for clothes and read sitting in the sun. Hopefully self isolation isn't too long and you will get to do some nice things before long. If you're in a hotel, can you change to airbnb somewhere quiet where you can sit outside in a courtyard or garden at least?

mommal20 · 21/12/2021 00:29

@Dancingonmoonlight nope, stuck in the hotel for 10 days now not even allowed out for a walk. Luckily I have a balcony. It's my 16 months old first proper Xmas too, can't believe it Sad

But what happens if you can't afford another ten days in the hotel?
Surely they have to give you the option to transfer somewhere affordable?
I deliberately have a very small credit limit on my credit card. If I had to pay for an unexpected additional ten days stay in a hotel I simply wouldn't have the credit limit to pay for it!

mommal20 · 22/12/2021 14:36

@Dancingonmoonlight the hotel haven't even pressured me for payment yet, and the Canary Islands are also providing their own insurance for tourists. If you couldn't afford the hotel I believe the authorities will put you in a government one, which obviously wouldn't be very nice.
