Childrens toothpaste....is this true?

I read on another thread the other day, that one mumsnetters uncle was a dentist, and he says that childrens toothpaste, in areas where there is no fluoride in the water, is useless because the fluoride levels in the toothpaste are so low.
I was wondering if this is true.
We have no fluoride added to our water.
I know childrens toothpaste (usually) has 500pcm of fluoride in, and adults 1500pcm (I think thats right?), so do children need more where there is no fluoride in water?

Do dentists still advise/sell fluoride tablets? I would have thought a combination of fluoride free toothpaste and a daily tablet would give a more controlled fluoride dose. I gave DD tablets when she was little, as we didn't have any fluoride in the water, she has perfect teeth now, never needed fillings.

Haven't read what everyone else has written on this thread, but when I went to my daughter's weaning talk, we were given some free stuff. In the freebies was some toothpaste, which is called something like 1450, because it has 1450pcm of fluoride in it. At the talk, we were told that the area that we live in does not have any fluoride in the water so this is the amount of fluoride that we have to use for our babies, but we only have to use a teeny, tiny amount.

didoreth, how old is dd?
I didnt know 98% of countries dont fluoridate their water anymore!
Do they know something that we dont?
Its a minefield.
Apparently we have the teeniest amount of fluoride in our water (but im sure a lot of places must have even a teeny amount?),
and my ds is just about to turn three, and doesnt swallow much, if any, toothpaste, so what ppm would anyone recommend for him?

I work for a dentist..we recommended a toothpaste with at least 1000ppm of fluoride, from as soon as teeth appear, and we are in a fluoridated area.

HereComeTheGirls · 20/12/2007 07:59

we recommend I mean

Seona1973 · 20/12/2007 14:59

I use morrisons own make kids toothpaste and it has 1000ppm fluoride

GrimmaTheNome · 20/12/2007 15:12

Someone's already mentioned it, about the only non-minty toothpaste >1000ppm is the older kids Oral B. (and maybe that organic strawberry one but when I got it they didn't quote the F in ppm and I can't remember now what it converted to... and I've got 2 chemistry degrees so HTF are most mums supposed to figure it out....)

And Hurray - at the moment the Oral B has pictures of cartoon rats on it instead of the yukky princesses or whatever-it-was on the 'boys' one I ended up getting for DD.
Why can't they do a reasonable looking toothbrush to go with it instead of rather hideous pirate ones?

the colgate 'older kids' one is far too minty. really stupid of them not to realise that younger kids need the F in non-F water areas and WONT like anything more than the softest mint.

I was given fluoride drops to add to Ds's milk, by my dentist. I didn't, maybe I should have done.

It is about average fluoride levels in water, I believe. I grew up in an area where there were high levels in the water, and only a few years ago when moving area, as an adult, did my dentist say that the white speckles on my front two teeth were down to too high levels of fluoride.

mumzyof2 · 20/12/2007 20:09

I have little speckles on my front teeth, I have only learnt that its too much fluoride on here. Well I never! Doesnt stop you needing bloody fillings though does it?!!

I have a thrice used tube of Toms of Maine strawberry which I am happy to send to anyone who CATs me their address, tried my Ds on it last week and he refused to unclam his teeth after the first try - just like that!
