Raised inflammatory markers in blood

Has anyone had this and they've gone down and been nothing serious? Had a blood test done a couple of weeks ago and they've booked me in for a repeat because the inflammatory markers were high, the receptionist asked if I'd had an infection lately, I've had covid and the bloods were taken a month after the positive test. Naturally I've been googling what inflammatory markers are and I'm worried now, and they could come up post covid but apparently only for severe cases which mine wasn't, they could also be an indicator of cancer. Ive not had any other infections that I know of. Repeat blood test on Christmas Eve to check they are going down.Tell me I'm being rediculous for using Dr Google

How high are they? It could be as simple as a slight cold or sore throat- something you might not even realise you've had

StrawberrySanta · 19/12/2021 13:30

She didn't say, I'm guessing it was the receptionist who called me with the results she told me then asked I've if had an infection lately and said they want to repeat and check that they are going down

Yep I had this a few weeks ago, the GP said they usually see it when people have covid. I had a negative covid test after the blood test, then actually did get covid....

But he didn't seem worried about it either way, just commented that something must have been going on.

Anything over 10 for crp is considered an abnormal result but it really isn't any thing to worry about- if it was really high they would have called you back immediately or a do for would have called you (mine is often in the 000s with an autoimmune flare)

christmaspombear · 19/12/2021 13:55

*doctor not do for 😂

Iluvfriends · 19/12/2021 13:58

Yes i had a high reading which then came back down to within normal. Lots of things can cause it so try not to worry too much.

Catfox1 · 19/12/2021 14:04

Mine have been high for 12 years+, doctor never tried to find out why and I’m still alive so can’t be too bad 😅

choosername1234 · 19/12/2021 14:08

The CRP is (informally) known as the Completely Random Protein because (almost) anything can cause it to spike.

StrawberrySanta · 19/12/2021 20:31

Okay thanks everyone hopefully it's just leftover from covid last month seems most likely now

Doesn’t necessarily have to be anything very serious - could also be autoimmune related like lupus / Addison’s/ pituitary issues etc.

Witchinthedales · 19/12/2021 22:01

My husband had this, he has back problems and the first test result was put down to a flare up of this, his next test they had gone back to normal. It's common for them to be raised and then be completely normal again on repeat tests.

alwaysscared · 19/12/2021 23:19

Mine have been high for years, no idea why

peridito · 20/12/2021 11:44

Yes I've had raised markers ,no cause ,not there at next test .

StrawberrySanta · 29/12/2021 08:41

Just had a call from Dr secretary, she said bloods have come back abnormal again and Dr wants me to have another repeat test with double bloods this time. Wonder what it is Sad. How many times will they repeat the test

Don’t worry too much - it’s good they’re taking it seriously.

Hopefully it’s Covid related but there are lots of other conditions it can help to identify (eg inflammatory bowel conditions) - that aren’t going to be fatal but it’s good to get on top of - that’s why they’re doing it.

Thanks I know you're right that they're investigating it and that's a good thing. The reason I had the blood done in the first place is since having covid I started having heart palpitations pretty much constantly, they sent me for bloods and ECG, ECG was totally fine but this other thing happened to be picked up on the blood test so if I didn't call I wouldn't have had one. The palpitations have fully stopped now anyway so I think that was a covid side affect

@StrawberrySanta

Hi, I am going through the same thing now. I have small child and really worry I am ill and it's serious. If you don't mind me asking what did you find out? Hopefully everything was fine with you? X

StrawberrySanta · 13/07/2024 10:16

@lemontree27

Hi, I was so worried about this but in honesty nothing really came of it. I have a repeat blood test every 6 months now. But at the time they kept on repeating the test due to the high inflammatory markers, which I was googling (bad idea) but I think the dr was satisfied that it wasn't a huge concern so just checked every 6 months now. Haven't heard anything further on it, and I've not been unwell or anything as a result.

I'm overweight and from what I've now read I think the excess weight can cause inflammation in the body plus other factors could be at play maybe high blood pressure, bad diet sort of thing. Sorry I couldn't be more help but I hope it's reassuring that it's not necessarily something serious x

I had this about six years ago, my doctor thought I could have crohns, so sent me for a colonoscopy which found nothing, so a complete mystery.
