I have had snapshot ecgs in a clinic, am waiting for a 24hr one. I feel my heart fluttering and thudding all the time. Someone said to get an app that you put your fingertip over the camera and flashlight and it gives a basic read. I did that, watched it for ages and every time I felt the flutter and thump, the rhythm changed. This is what one of these strange beats looks like. I've attached an image of the normal rhythm before it and then the strange one.

What is it likely to be?

That's not an ECG, just a very crude pulse measurement. Probably a skipped beat, but totally impossible to give any medical insight based off that.

No, I didn't think it was a proper ECG, looks nothing like the reading I got in clinic, but these happen all day every day, why are am
I skipping beats all the time? What does it mean /what causes it? There are a lot of heart problems in my maternal family, but I have to wait ages for the 24hr ecg and I just want an idea of what's happening.

So I've watched this pulse thing for about five minutes and counted 30 of these weird beats. It feels like a five month pregnancy moving and kicking, but in my chest! It's strange.

That looks like a pulse oximetry trace. And you've moved. It's not the same as an ECG. Infrared light measures the oxygen in your blood.

Ok, so ignore the images. I keep getting that feeling in my chest, my husband can listen to my heartbeat and hear the weird differences, the doctor has heard it with a stethoscope and said it's like it skips a beat and then tries to catch up, but on the ECG they did in clinic its too short to capture it properly so they've asked the GP to do a 24hr one. The GP have said they can't do it until maybe February, so all I want is some idea of what it could be and how to make it stop. It's a very weird feeling, it does it all throughout the day, I can very much feel it and it's noticeable even when I'm busy and could be distracted.

Sounds like harmless ectopic. In the absence of other cardiac symptoms it’ll prob be fine.

And that charts was resps not ecg!

Siuan · 17/12/2021 16:46

Most likely ectopic beats, they can feel like your heart skips a beat then goes bump. Very common and harmless.

bloodywhitecat · 17/12/2021 19:56

I get ectopic beats, they feel most disconcerting at times but are harmless.

KatyRebecca84 · 17/12/2021 19:59

Probably ectopics. I get them all the time. I work in cardiology. Being aware makes them worse for me! Limit alcohol and caffeine and drink lots of water. Also sugar and fatty foods make mine worse! Hard over Xmas I’m sure!

The holter monitor will show a better picture and be reassuring. You can buy something called an alivecor monitor that you do an ecg at home with and it tells you what it might be. However mine told me atrial fibrillation which it isn’t! It’s merely benign ectopic beats so sometimes these things are more worrying than reassuring!
