I've just taken a low dose valium tablet. What do I expect now?

Am at wits end and feeling a little bit like I might lose it. Will the valium calm me down? I'm also on paracetamol etc for heavy cold - is it dangerous to combine the two? Feel like taking another one actually.

I had a valium tablet just before having eye surgery. The idea was that it would help me sleep. I don't particularly remember any specific feelings.

discoverlife · 19/12/2007 12:22

Is the valium precription and are you taking it for a particular reason.
It is okay to take normal doses of over the counter cold medicines with valium.

If this is the first time you have taken valium, don't expect immediate results, it takes about 3 weeks to come to full saturation, but you will start feeling slightly better in a few days. Not brilliantly over the moon but less likely to crumple into an incompetant heap. If you take them as prescribed, by Christmas you will be feeling a bit more in control.

Sorry you were typing at same time. The valium will just make it less likely for your heart rate and bloodpressure to sky rocket, its not likely to make you feel too different. My son had a sedative for dental surgery and it didn't properly kick in until the teeth were out. I had to carry him to the car, he was bloody drunk on it.

That's very interesting discoverlife. They are prescription but am only supposed to take them when feeling I can't cope. So although they were prescribed in April, this is the first time I've taken one. The idea isn't to take them daily and build up to a level of calmness, I thought they would work pretty much instantly. Sounds like my GP has prescribed the wrong drug for me?

You will feel fine. How many mgs? they will calm you from when your first take them [ime] This was 10mg.

Valium are not usually prescribed now for more than 3 weeks are they are so addictive.

I am not allowed them at all now. I abuse them and take too many. Sadly.

DaphneHarvey · 19/12/2007 12:34

I'm sure they are much lower does than that - 4mg or 2mg - I've left my glasses at work and can't read the label!

Is 10mg safe then, considered a "normal" dose?

I don't agree with discoverlifes take on valium. It is often perscribed for anxiety because it acts there and then, it is not like anti depressents that take weeks to work.

You should feel less stressed. I was prescribed 2mg which is very low for panic attacks ages ago.

CarmenerryChristmas · 19/12/2007 12:38

Yes it is very addictive so not recomended fr long term use.

coldtits · 19/12/2007 12:40

I found that my 2mg Valium worked in 30 minutes. You will feel less inclined to move, or panic. You won't get that weird anxiety adrenalin rush feeling.

It wore off after about 2 hours though.

coldtits · 19/12/2007 12:41

10mg is safe, I am fairly sure - it is addictive but it is also considered very safe if you follow the instructions.

SantaBabyBeenAnAwfulGoodGirl · 19/12/2007 12:44

its prescribed because it is a quick fix not for long term use to build up

such as before ads kick in for example or for a specific medical event or to anticipate something short term anxiety

RBH · 19/12/2007 12:46

Valium works in about half an hour. It should just take the edge off and make you feel calmer. 2mg is a low dose. 10mg is still safe but over here especially tends not to be prescribed too often. DH hates flying and has been known to take 2 x 10mgs. He gets very spacey and calm!

Valium is highly addictive and was very over-prescribed in the 70s/80s but when used correctly is brilliant.

discoverlife · 19/12/2007 12:54

Sorry ladies, wrong advise, I was prescribed prozac, totally different stuff.
My apologies.

discoverlife · 19/12/2007 12:54

Is there anyway to delete my post as it could mislead someone and I don't want mislead info on a health forum?

MellowChristmasEveryone · 19/12/2007 12:55

You can press the ! button

DaphneHarvey · 19/12/2007 13:03

Thanks for your answers everyone. I'm not sure valium is quite the right thing for me. Right now I think I need a great big kick up the backside!

Don't worry discoverlife - I've seen that yours was Prozac. But you can delete your message without deleting the whole thread I think.
