Hypothyroidism tongue

Does anyone suffer with a sensation of a swollen tongue when their thyroid is out of whack? It is becoming really really upsetting and distracting from daily life 😭

Yep. I get teeth indentations round the edge in a scallop pattern. Always a sign to check iron levels, boost adrenals and maybe inch up dose.

DeedIDo · 14/12/2021 13:42

Pie crust tongue, classic sign of hypothyroidism, although GPs now may not know this.

Buttston2 · 14/12/2021 13:59

Wow I get this alot what does it mean? I'm on 100mcg levothyroxine and too pumped up jittery with palpitations on 125mcg. Is my dose to small? I despair of this hypothyroidism my tsh is always well under 2 so my symptoms are always put down to something else.

DeedIDo · 15/12/2021 13:21

Have you ever had your FT3 tested?

Mammymoo2021 · 16/12/2021 21:43

I haven't even been treated by my gp yet. They keep saying my TSH of 4 is perfect. By TSH had always been 1.5 until I had a partial thyroidectomy in July and since then I've all hypothyroidism symptoms but the gp keeps insisting I'm fine. I'm close to losing my mind, and my tongue if I keep biting it 😭

You're hypo OP. TSH should be under 2 if you're not medicated and lower than that if you are and if you don't have a fully functioning thyroid, you will need supplementation, starting at 1.6mcg per kg of body weight.

The Thyroid UK forum should be able to help you.

Mammymoo2021 · 17/12/2021 19:15

Thank you, I wish you were my gp 😅

Hi @Mammymoo2021 did you ever get to the bottom of your tongue/thyroid issue?

I have a weird tongue. It feels enormous, patchy with enlarged taste buds and a scalloped edge.
Other symptoms are feeling cold, weight gain, hair thinning, fatigue and anxiety.... oh the anxiety!
Had a partial thyroidectomy 20 years ago and think it may be now slowing down (I'm 41 now)

Hopefully the GP will be calling me today. I couldn't make an appointment only book a request for a consultation which will be reviewed within 48 hours 🙄

Mammymoo2021 · 03/02/2022 17:25

I really wish I could say yes I solved it but no it's still my most annoying and stressful symptom. I managed to convince my gp to allow me a trial of levothyroxine but she only gave 25mg. I'm on it 4 weeks now. I've noticed a big change as in gerd gone, suddenly have hair growth, lost weight but tongue still the same. If u find any magic answers let me know x

My GP won't see me until next Tuesday. I'm not sure what's going on with my tongue but it's sending my anxiety levels through the roof. Glad the levothyroxine has resolved some of your issues, maybe if they increase it your tongue will be less annoying aswell xx

Mammymoo2021 · 08/02/2022 20:44

How did you get on with the gp today? Bad tongue week for me this week, hoping you found some inspiring news!

@OneMoreForExtra How does one boost adrenal glands? Pretty sure I need this.
OneMoreForExtra · 08/02/2022 21:22

Bitterbean i take adrenal cortex capsules if it gets bad, and support it most of the time with phosphatidylserine and pregnenolone (all bought easily from health sites online). I massively notice it if I run out. Take iron, zinc and vits as well.

There's a lot of stuff to read out there and it can be a bit trial and error. It's also not mainstream so plenty of room for healthy caution and doubt so be selective about some of the woo stuff. That said, I find if I've been mildly hypo or under extra stress (which can be just lack of sleep or bright sunlight, doesn't have to be stress stress), I feel the symptoms of lowered resilience, anxiety, less coping, tired but wired, palpitations, insomnia, pale, tummy upsets and my hypothyroidism doesn't respond to things that normally help. Good luck!

Chummy21 · 09/02/2022 09:46

@Mammymoo2021 My GP didn't want to check my tongue... but she's sending me for bloods and has prescribed sertraline for my anxiety. She said once my bloods come back we'll ho from there.

Tongue is still scalloped with what I'm thinking may be geographic tongue... I've been doing salt water rinses which seems to have made it less inflammed.

Still no joy for you? X

Thanks @OneMoreForExtra for the information. Do you know if the supplements are recommended by the NHS?
Mammymoo2021 · 09/02/2022 18:13

How annoying of your gp! Imagine not wanting to check your tongue, that's their job!! Have u had your b12 checked? That's been mentioned to me as a possibility by a few docs

OP posts:
sprinklingzane · 09/02/2022 18:15

Could be a sigh of B12 deficiency. Ask for a test!

OneMoreForExtra · 09/02/2022 18:16

Course they're not Bitterbean. Adrenal fatigue and subclinical hypothyroidism dont exist, don't you know.

Ah yes sorry, stupid question!
Chummy21 · 15/02/2022 21:14

@Mammymoo2021 just a little update. TSH is 1.88 so within normal range.... must just be my anxiety playing tricks on me. Hope everything works out for you xx

Mammymoo2021 · 15/02/2022 22:57

I'm glad to hear your thyroid hasn't given up on u at least! I had a vitamin b12 injection and I don't know if its an element of placebo or not but I felt it helped. I'm definitely trying to do more relaxation and take my focus off it too though so it's hard to know. Maybe anxiety is playing tricks again. I hope u get some relief x
