Tendonitis agony!

Looking for some advice for my husband. Woke up one morning five days ago with his foot in agony. Hasn't injured it or anything. Went to the doctor who told him it's tendonitis and to rest and use ice. He can barely walk and is groaning in pain when sat or lying, worse in the mornings. How long does this take to heal? Does it get better or just go suddenly? He has a week off work and then has to go back, I don't know how he's going to manage! He can't even put his shoe on as his foot is so swollen. Does anyone have any advice? Will he be able to bear weight on it soon? I hate seeing him in pain like this knowing he just has to wait it out Sad

I had this and it was excruciating. I went to A&E thinking I'd somehow broken a bone. The x-ray didn't show anything though. It did ease but a couple of months on I still had a near-constant dull ache, with severe pain if I did anything strenuous or even walked or stood for very long. I went to the GP who referred me to a specialist, I had an MRI, tendonitis was diagnosed and I had a laser-guided steroid injection. That helped a lot. 18 months on from the injection (almost 2 years from the initial pain) I rarely feel it at all and the only time it hurt a lot was when I tried a run outdoors (treadmill is fine).

Swelling sounds unlike any tendonitis I have ever come across, which admittedly isn't much. But my husband has had problems with a knee tendon and a foot tendon and I have had tennis elbow twice and neither of us has experienced much (if anything) in the way of swelling. Since GP appointments are rare as hen's teeth and he's already had one maybe a visit to a private physio might help, if funds permit?

Could it be Gout?

Monsoon92 · 08/12/2021 21:22

Thanks for the replies. He's going to call a private physio tomorrow as he doesn't want to wait to be referred. That steroid injection sounds good @WildStallyn, will suggest that to him. I've just looked up Gout @MaHBroon, how is it treated? A quick Google just mentions infection. Thanks all!

How did he get on at the physio OP? Where exactly is his pain in his foot? Doesnt sound like typical tendinitis. Are there any little wounds? Could he have an infection? Is he alright in himself-fever etc?

WomblingKnobhead · 09/12/2021 21:36

Could it be plantar fascitis? It's very painful.

Monsoon92 · 10/12/2021 14:18

He's got an appointment tomorrow @MrsDoraDumble so fingers crossed they help him out! He can't really pinpoint the pain - sometimes bottom of his foot, sometimes ankle and sometimes calf! Can't see any wounds and no fever or anything. He seems normal just frustrated.

Although he was hitting his knee last night which seemed to ease the pain at the bottom of his foot temporarily which is weird!

Pain is strange op, could be coming from his back as referred pain. Good that he will see physio tomorrow they be able to figure out what’s happening.

Monsoon92 · 11/12/2021 01:02

Hopefully it's something easily sorted, he's getting quite upset about it now!

How is he doing op?

Monsoon92 · 19/12/2021 10:14

Hi all, I meant to come back to say thank you, but now I have more questions anyway! So his other foot got better - he went to the physiotherapist who twisted it about a bit and told him to do more walking - it was tendonitis and then he injured it further by walking funny to compensate, which meant it got massively swollen and painful. Walking on it helped to reduce swelling and pain.

HOWEVER, now the other foot has exactly the same pain! He has swelling and redness in a specific area just at the back of his foot. I assume this is from him walking funny for the last couple of weeks, but it's so annoying for him that one's healed and the other is letting him down now! So I guess another round of physio for him until this heals!
