Might lose my back tooth. Completely gutted

I’m a bit devastated. Just back from the dentist for my final root canal treatment on one of my molar teeth. I have a crack in this tooth which was next to my nerve and was causing intense pain. The plan was to get a porcelain overlay on my tooth to protect the crack from getting worse. However it’s got worse just in the few weeks since my last appointment so the dentist is kind of thinking the overlay won’t work. I might need to get my tooth taken out and a implant fitted. He has filled my tooth and wants to see me in a month to check how the root canal treatment has settled and to see if the crack has got any worse. If it has got worse there's no point getting the overlay.

I feel really sick and upset by it. It’s my back tooth but I’m still really gutted. I can’t help thinking that not seeing the dentist for 18 months in lockdown won’t have helped things.
Anyone ever had similar?

Just had an implant last week for similar situation.

It was really quick, in fact the dentist took out my cracked tooth and fitted the implant in one go. It took 30 mins and was easier than root canal.

I also got a special offer on the implant , £1900 all in.

I had my last baby tooth removed a few months ago after it started to wobble. It was three from the back on the bottom right. Once out it took about a month to heal completely. I considered an implant or a bridge but really it's fine as it is. It's quite hard to spot unless you know where to look! The only discomfort I've had is when eating pointy crisps or really crusty bread.

I've had my upper back left molar taken out after it broke and my wisdom tooth came down and took its place

My upper left needs to be taken out too there's only half of it left and mostly filling

We've been on a dentist waiting list for 3 years.

@mankywits really? Wow. I thought it would be a really long drawn out process. Sounds great

I was advised against an immediate implant as outcomes aren’t as good/long lasting. Better to allow the bone to fill back out and go from there.
