Febrile convulsion or nightmare ??

Ds (along with the rest of the house) is ill with cough, cold and high temp.

He went to bed last night dosed up with meds and was fine until he came into my room at about 1am. He was roasting and so I gave him more meds and he got in to bed with me and went back to sleep.

At what must of been about 7am, I was lying facing away from ds and was suddenly woken by his whole body shaking. I came too and rolled over in what must have been seconds and by then he had stopped so I didn't actually see it.

I called his name and he was awake and said 'what was that mummy, what happened'. I said 'Harry are you ok' and he said 'yes, I had a bad dream'. He then went back to sleep.

He has had bad dreams before but never with that reaction, and it really was his whole body shaking, I could feel it.

Should I do anything ?? He seems fine this morning.

If it was a febrile convulsion, you would be certain, they are very dramatic, and he would have lost conciousness for quite a few minutes, and taken a while to come round again. they are absolutely unmistakable, and very very scarey to see.

It sounds like he had the shakes due to his high temperature - he should really see the doctor as it means that his temperature was very high. It is a good sign that he seems fine this morning.

Could have been a febrile convulsion. They can be anything from a few seconds toa minute.
I didn't take my lad to the docs when he had one at 15 months because it would have meant hours parping around in hospital (the same thing happenend with ds1 a year earlier). He was fine.
But if he had a second or seemed out of it then I would. How old is he?

nutcracker · 17/12/2007 10:08

He is five.

He does get the wobbles as he calls them with a high temp, but this was nothing like that and he knows when he has the wobbles, he had no clue what had happened with this.

His temp now is fine, slightly warm but not roasting as his was last night.

At the time of the FC or nightmare he wasn't actually that hot, but have just read that this is usually the case.

Could be yeah, just googled it and bits of it fit.

Suppose I will never know really. Scared the life out of me mind you.

that's reason enough to go to a GP today. Hope he gets well soon.

Thank you

I have experienced 4 febrile convulsions and the child doesn't always loose consciousness. I would take him to the GP today.

I would say it doesn't sound like a febrile convulsion - the child isn't at all aware of what's happening.

(my dd3 has had a couple this weekend - on top of a history of having them, and it doesn't sound like anything she has had).

My other children are fairly unwell at the moment, and they have all been having severe shaking episodes with their high temperatures. It is very worrying I agree as I have never experienced this kind of reaction to illness before.

nutcracker - how is he now?
