Relux - anyone know if Omeprazole comes in liquid form?

My 7 month old DS was diagnosed with silent reflux last week and prescribed Omeprazole and Domeperidome. The Omeprazole is a tablet that we have to dissolve in water and then give him via a syringe, but it tastes foul and he spits it out. Have tried adding it to puree etc but won't eat it. Can only get it down him by putting it in petit filou but don't really want to be giving him them everyday as got too much sugar in for my liking!

does anyone know if the omeprazole comes in liquid syrup form that tastes nice(er)!! Or if there is a better way to get it in him!

I've just had a look in the BNF online (drug formulary) and it doesn't seem to come in liquid form.

You can get Losec (omeprazole) as a multiple-unit pellet system (dispersible tablets); is that what you've got?

Jen1978 · 16/12/2007 21:40

Yes think that is what they are as we have to dissolve them in water. i don't mind doing this, its just that they taste nasty!

Omeprazole doesn't dissolve very easily - even the MUPs.

I always thought it wasn't available as a liquid - but I think I was proved wrong when someone on here found a generic version which was sold a suspension.

Just watching something on ebay then will search for you.

Unfortunately it doesn't come in any other form . I've got access to the BNF (GPs prescribing bible!) and it advises dissolving and putting in yoghurt or fruit juice - have you tried it in a bit of juice?
Also, have you tried the less sugary fromage frais/yoghurts? Rachel's organic do a children's sugar free one.

Where can you buy the rachel's children's sugar free one? Had a good look in tescos the other day but didn't see that one - mind you it wasn't a big store!
Hvn't tried it in fruit juice, hes never had any juice before - any suggestions as to which one to try?

check out the penultimate post on this thread. Doesn't give any specific info about names or anything though.

You should make up in water and then put into juice or yoghurt (see link within thread).

I didn't think it was available as a suspension either BTW.

I asked different chemists around town about this when DS was on Losec. They all said it doesn't come in liquid form. I found that it dissolved quicker in warm water and DS preferred it in a fruit puree - trick is not to use much water then put it in as little amount of the puree/yogurt as you can get away with so there isn't a huge amount to get them to swallow.

Thanks all, I have now had it confirmed from the hospital that it definitely doesn't come in liquid form! DS has a 10mg tablet that he has to have dissolved in 10ml of water and then only have 5 ml of this, does anyone know if it would be ok to make it up with less water than this an still only give him half?

hi I always used to use less liquid than recommended, as there was less to get down ds2's throat that way. He always hated it and he didn't get off the drugs until 2 years old! We gave loads and loads of encouragement and cheers when he swallowed it. Even ds1 used to get involved.

I think if you have a very amenable pharmacy they can make it in compounded form (I seem to remember reading this on one of the international reflux forums) but they can only make up small amounts each time as it doesn't last. I didn't investigate that route as it was already enough of an inconvenience to go to the hospital pharmacy every time we needed some more, and convince them that we needed more than a one or two week supply - our gp practice refused to do repeat prescriptions for stuff the paeds had prescribed, as they aren't licensed for use on children.

also I didn't use a syringe, instead one of the tiny cups with the measurements on the side - I found the granules got stuck in the syringe as it doesn't really dissolve very well. With a cup he could drink down the liquid and I could use a clean finger to scoop out any granules that were left.
