Can Anyone help About? About once every 3/4 months my back will go into spasm, after 2 to 3 days it will go back to normal. Recently I've been getting it alot. For the last 8 days I've had a very bad back, it feels strained, any movement is very hard, even picking up the smallest weight, I feel my back straining. I pushed myself to go into work the last 3 shifts, very physical as a care worker and it was so so hard. Last shift was Thurs and now I'm struggling big time, it's very bad. Have been to Chiropractor, rang GP who prescribed Diazepam, didn't really want to take it, took one this morning and didn't do anything. I do a few simple jobs and have to sit down because it's too much. What else can I try please? I really can't afford to miss work as I'll only get the statutory pay but unfortunately I think I'm going to have to call in for next week, gutted as I'll have reduced money just before Xmas. Ideas needed please, what can I try?

In the short term I'm not sure, but to stop this happening again I recommend going to Pilates classes to strengthen your core and improve posture etc. It's also quite relaxing and calming.
If your back goes into spasm every few months, is it related to stress?

MynameisWa · 28/11/2021 17:56

Where is the pain?

dizzydizzydizzy · 28/11/2021 17:59

I would try sports massage for instant relief and as PP has said Pilates for the long term. If you co fact your local running club, they will be able to recommend a good sports massage therapist.

Thank you, someone mentioned Pilates, the chiropractor did suggest my core could be weak so my back is over compensating.

@MynameisWa

Where is the pain?
Lower back, but today it's moved up, also my hips are hurting. It's more of a strain like I've holding a heavy weight all the time. When I do nothing there's so discomfort, it's only when I'm active. Even standing up but still is really exhausting and I can feel my back straining.

I'd love a massage. I made a couple enquiries and booked up but will have another look .

Also came on to recommend Pilates as a long term cure. It's made the world of difference to me. Short term, you need a few days off. Ibuprofen will reduce the inflammation, but take it all week. A chiropractor might be able to help in the short term if you can afford it? Meantime, keep your back straight when you pick things up, try not to twist your back. Lie on your back on the floor, with your feet and calves resting on a coffee table or footstool. Stay there for ten minutes.

It’s difficult to know exactly what the issue is but it could be a trapped nerve somewhere in your spine. I had similar recently. I couldn’t sleep lying down and needed to be propped up. I tried all the exercise etc and did loads of yoga. In the end, I cured it with a combination of back strengthening exercise (the plank), massage using a hard ball against a walk in the troublesome area and - most importantly - ice pack and hot water bottle treatment for three evenings in a row alternating 20 mins at a time. That nailed it.

Good luck Op. back pain is so miserable.

A sports physio and look at doing some pilates. I have recently had a back operation for a herniated disc. I now do pilates routines from youtube along with exercises the physio gave me. My back is better than it has been for years. Lottie Murphy pilates is good. She does a low back routine which I do daily.

I thought my issue was muscular and it might have been. But stretching didn’t cure it.

You're welcome- I know how desperate it can make you feel x

The cold ice treatment is the thing that matters. I tried just hot and soaking in bath etc but nothing worked until I did the ice. U should try it.
