Do GPs actually examine suspicious moles?

Or do they just take a quick look and refer you if need be? Thank you xx

Mine examined mine with a microscope thing with a light on it 2 weeks ago

MustDust · 25/11/2021 22:13

Same here a couple of months ago. Called a colleague in to back up the opinion.

Emmelina · 25/11/2021 22:15

I’ve had moles looked at. She gave it a good look and feel under the big light magnifier thing!

TheFairyCaravan · 25/11/2021 22:15

Mine did on Tuesday. Took 2 telephone appointments and a trip to the pharmacy to get him to do it, though

bookworm1982 · 25/11/2021 22:22

Thank you Smile

I've had dark mole appear on the sole of my foot and I'm terrified Sad

Pixiedust1234 · 25/11/2021 22:27

Are you sure its not a verruca since its on the sole?

Our gp didn't look at daughters mole when it half ripped off overnigt and bled everywhere. Made her do a photo via econsult, gave her antibiotics in case it got infected and said it was very common. I've never heard of it before but then I'm not a gp

WoolyMammoth55 · 25/11/2021 22:30

Hi OP, I've taken weird moles to the GP twice.

First time in London GP had a glance, then referred me to the skin cancer clinic on the 2 week pathway - it turned out to be fine.

Second time a different GP got out a big lit up magnifying gizmo and confirmed all fine in the consult - no referral.

I think it's likely you'll be seen in person if any degree of cancer risk, and then either they'll decide themselves you're ok or possibly refer if not sure.

Best of luck!

Peanut91 · 25/11/2021 22:33

Yes I was seen the next day by my GP when I queried a suspicious mole. They took a look at it and referred me to the dermatology team at the local hospital who agreed to remove it and it was done yesterday.

bookworm1982 · 25/11/2021 22:34

Thank you. It's definitely not wart. Here's a pic. I'm loosing my mind with worry. I've already decided it's skin cancer - literally nothing on Google has reassured me that it isn't. Everything screams Melanoma Sad

Please push to have this seen. Moles on the soles of your feet are unusual. My relative had one and it was cancerous. Had to have a big chunk cut out. Not to scare you, but the sooner you get it checked, the smaller it will be!

Where was yours? Did it look like mine? See pic?

stormsurfer · 25/11/2021 22:35

Just seen the pic. Looks like a blood blister? But still best to get it seen and checked.

bookworm1982 · 25/11/2021 22:36

It's looks bigger in pic than it actually is - it's smaller than the top of a pencil eraser. And apologies for the crusty skin on my feet Blush

I had one taken out 2015 so February went to GP and looked at the one on my leg, next day up at hospital to get photo of it and then March for first biopsy June for second as they wanted a deeper biopsy and then October whole thing taken out.

Took months to heal properly as the location at the bottom of leg/ankle has less fat there to protect it. It became infected, stitches burst great fun. Scar is very small, only noticeable when i have a tan.

toastfiend · 25/11/2021 22:40

@bookworm1982 I had one exactly the same as this. Like you, I was very worried. Mine turned out to be a subcorneal haematoma. I have no idea how it happened, but the chiropodist basically just shaved it off and it was gone. It was totally harmless. My advice would be to go to a chiropodist if you can afford to do so, they know what to look for and will refer you to the GP if they think it is suspicious. Definitely get it looked at, but I wouldn't be panicking at this stage.

Was it actually cancerous? Xx

This is very reassuring, thank you. Did you just appear too then? Xx

I have loads OP including one on the sole of my foot like yours. All non offensive. I ended up at dermatologist then medical photography having them all documented so I can check against the pics to monitor for changes. All fine but it's very reassuring to be checked.

Wbeezer · 25/11/2021 22:52

That looks more like a blood blister type thing to me, but best to get it checked.

Sunnysideup999 · 25/11/2021 22:52

Could be a blood blister

Greenhillfaraway · 25/11/2021 22:53

I went to the doctor on Monday about a mole on my leg. She has referred me but said she would have examined it further if she had the correct equipment in the surgery.

Letter from the hospital came through today for an appointment next week.

See a professional as soon as you can to have your mind put at ease Flowers

bookworm1982 · 25/11/2021 23:04

Thank you. You're all making me feel much better. Hopefully I can get some sleep Hmm

I've had multiple moles excised; suspected melanomas have always been referred by GP to be examined and removed by a consultant dermatologist. But I've had a couple of suspected basal cell carcinomas excised by the GP (a teaching practice that does very small surgery ).
