I don't have private health insurance but feel I want and need a thorough check up so happy to pay.

Looking for somewhere in London (central or South East). Does anyone have any recommendations? Thank you.

What exactly do you want? .... blood Tests? CT scans? What do you want to know?
At my GP all over 40s can have a yearly blood test, weight, lifestyle assessment, BP reading .... its free..... have you asked at your practice

Private health providers like BUPA will give you a Well Woman (or Man) check - it's usually a 'menu' type thing where you can add on the things you want:
www.bupa.co.uk/health/health-assessments/female-health

BUT as other posters have said, have you checked the full range of health checks already available free from your GP practice (or even your local pharmacy)? You should be able to get a number of ordinary health checks for free?

It’s interesting there is no fee on that link.
I bet it’s £££

I had something like that through work, it also included a mammogram. Blood tests so they’d check cholesterol, and loads of other stuff like that. BP etc… You could also do a fitness test for a cardio assessment. It was BUPA, and the one I went to was near Bank, so very central. I don’t know the cost because work paid. Id expect between £3-500. Depending on add-ons.

is that truly possible? Are GPs really refusing to see someone like me in person with ear infection symptoms but happy to offer worried well a range of wellbeing checks? I'm not convinced it's so easy.

My GP stopped offering health checks at 40 about 2 years ago - I rang up to book one and was told this. Perhaps some GPs still offer them, but the checks were pretty basic I believe. Nothing like the amazing Bupa checkup I used to get through work years ago. You can ring any private healthcare provider and pay for a one-off health check.

I had a BUPA type one through work when I was a senior manager. It was interesting, but the reality was that a lot of the information was simple stuff you could monitor yourself 'dressed up' in a lengthy report in a glossy binder Hmm.

  • weight/ BMI etc - You can buy a set of 'smart scales' for £20 which work with an app and give you weight/ muscle mass/% water / BMI etc
  • Health Assessment Questionnaire - there are numerous free ones online!
  • Blood Pressure - again, £20 will buy you the same sort of BP monitor used by health visitors/ midwives etc AND checking regularly at home will give you a much better range of readings than a single visit to the GP
  • cholesterol tests - some pharmacies (e.g. Lloyds) used to offer these pre-covid for about £20
  • cardio fitness test - if you have a fitbit you can get a cardio fitness score related to activity and recovery. This is at least as accurate as the fitness tests achieved on a treadmill.

So cervical screening and mammogram might be the only things not listed so far, but these SHOULD be being offered by your GP if you're eligible.

What exactly do you want checked, OP?

Thanks everyone. I have recently come down with esophagitis, which has prompted me to think an mot would be good. Liver function, kidneys, cholesterol, iron, other key vitamins. I asked my GP and he said no! They aren't seeing anyone f2f anyway.
