Please help with my recurrent thrush

kittykat818 · 22/11/2021 14:44

Hi, I have been getting thrush for about 4 years now (ever since losing my virginity) and nothing is seeming to stop it from coming back. I have done two 6 month courses of fluconazole, tried changing my diet and underwear, been tested for diabetes, tried multi gyn gel and high strength probiotics. I should also mention that I have been with the same boyfriend since I started getting it and that he has also been getting treated when I pass it on to him. I am really not sure what else I can try. I got thrush again last month after not getting it for a few months and it took weeks and weeks to disappear and a number of treatments (about 3 pessaries and 4 fluconazole tablets) and it has already returned! I am so worried about building up a resistance to the medicine and having nothing that gets rid of it. If anyone has any tips please let me know, I am also sure it is thrush and not something else as I have had lots of swabs done by doctors.

The impact caused mine, no probs since taking it out, if that relates to you?

Chenga · 22/11/2021 14:51

What are you using for contraception, OP?

Wnikat · 22/11/2021 14:52

The only thing that fixed it for me was my boyfriend getting circumcised (for other reasons) but that might not be a very helpful suggestion! Probiotics?

RampantIvy · 22/11/2021 14:55

Recurrent thrush can be a symptom of diabetes. It might be worth checking this out.

OP has been checked for this.

That used to be me. It wasn't just itching,it was really sore. As well as the things you have done,I stopped washing or showering with anything other than, water for the shower, and bit of sea salt in the bath. I had years of this with my exH. Also went veggi, took pre and pro biotics. Eventually it stopped

CaptainMyCaptain · 22/11/2021 15:04

Are you washing your underwear in bio powder? This was giving me thrush for a long time and a doctor suggested non bio. It worked for me.

That will teach me not to skim read the OP Blush

Hi all, I am currently not on any contraception. I was advised by the GP to try coming off the combined pill in case that was a trigger. I have since tried the progesterone-only pill but continued to get thrush while taking that!

Do you use condoms and/or lubricant? A sugary lube was the trigger for my stubborn case of thrush.

I got rid of thrush like this when I got the antibiotic for bacterial vaginosos.

romdowa · 22/11/2021 15:22

I discovered that it was my pads that I wore for my period that were giving me thrush. I also found that going underwear free at home and just wearing loose cotton pj bottoms or shorts really helped as well.

TulipsGarden · 22/11/2021 15:28

Have you tried stopping having sex for a while? Not much fun I know, but it might give things a chance to calm down.

I had this in my early 20s, triggered by the Pill, finally cleared up using pessaries (I can't remember what now), but it caused a chronic condition called vulvar vestibulitis which I still suffer from 20 years later. It is no fun and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

I would also advise avoiding sugar as much as possible.

BobbieT1999 · 22/11/2021 15:33

Recurrent thrush can be treated by a long prescription of regular pessaries, it's worth asking your gp to prescribe them for 6months or similar. It will at least help you manage them.

HermioneWeasley · 22/11/2021 15:35

Try a broader spectrum anti fungal. I was out on something called “itraconazole” or similar.

Wash with cetraben cream

Take a good probiotic (lamberts)

I also have to eat Greek yoghurt regularly to keep it at bay. Fortunately no hardship there!

Navigatingtheunknown · 22/11/2021 15:36

Do you always have sex with condoms? I find latex gives me thrush, I thought it was sex but it was the condoms.

Something else that helped me is sleeping with no underwear on at night. Shower With just water just before bed if you can and after your nighttime wee (even if you just shower your vulva). That should help too.

I would also try periodically using thrush cream (2%) even when you don’t have it to keep it at bay.

HalfHope · 22/11/2021 15:44

I've had a lot of thrush problems in the past. My triggers were hot baths even in clear water, allergies to canestan which would cause dermatitis which would invite thrush back. Can't wear tight trousers. Can only wear tights if I cut a ventilation hole in the gusset. Can only wash area with clear water.

TulipsGarden · 22/11/2021 16:52

Just thought - using thrush cream straight after sex (and after washing) also helps keep it at bay.

HeartZone · 22/11/2021 17:04

I always find it to be 100% diet.
Worth cutting out alcohol, chocolate, bananas, sugary food for a month to see if it clears? Always worse at Christmas time.

Ellie1311 · 23/11/2021 17:05

I was on long term antibiotic treatment for my bladder so used to get the odd bout of thrush. I take probiotics and a 3000mg garlic capsule - seems to keep it at bay. Also not washing with anything but water down there and using organic no perfumed period pads. There’s also boric acid which I’ve heard is amazing
