hubby just fell down stairs with lo (nearly 5 months) in arms

this morning early when lo woke up at 4 am

he landed on his back still holding lo as when he started - one arm on LO bum and one behind LO neck

fell down about three steps

lo screamed and screamed and i managed to sooth him down wihtin 5 mins

he then had a little nap of 40 mins]

now he is all smiles and doing eveything he normally does

no bruises that i can see

what would a&e do apart from say keep an eye on him?

dont think they'd scan his head unless he went unconcious etc

so would you go?

what a morning!

frightful and cant stop thinking what if they fell from higher..........

has this happened to anyone else

is your dh ok?

bumbly · 15/12/2007 10:04

If you are really worried I would go to A&E and get him checked. They won't turn you away with a little one. It may be nothing but at least you know for sure and you won't worry anymore.

bumbly · 15/12/2007 10:06

was wondering if anyone been in this situation and what "checks" would they do....

OP posts:
yurt1 · 15/12/2007 10:07

As he fine and stopped screaming after 5 mins (was probably shocked) I wouldn't go but would keep an extra eye on him. Signs to look out for would be extra drowsiness, vomiting, inconsolable screaming etc.

lljkk · 15/12/2007 10:08

Signs to watch out for:
Baby vomitting (not just possetting cuz overfed a bit)
Baby being off milk
Baby going floppy when there isn't another obvious reason (like stuffed up on breastmilk)
Going blue, crying inconsolably.
Eyes doing anything unusual.

He sounds fine, btw. I really wouldn't worry about it. I think DD fell out of a Baby Bjorn sling twice n rapid succession onto a concrete floor when she was 4 weeks old. Landed on her bum, but still

loopylou6 · 15/12/2007 10:08

i think he'd be ok, just keep an eye out for drowsiness or any out of charector behaviour, one thing i do suggest is make sure DH carried the baby around alot today, u dont want a scenario where the baby is to scared to be held by daddy, this happened to me once, my DH slipped whilst carrying DD he didnt fall as he managed to steady himself but she was warey of being picked up by him for a while

LadyOfTheHollyAndTheIvy · 15/12/2007 10:09

If DH landed on his back holding the baby and the baby did not hit the stairs, no red marks/bruises on baby, then it is probo DH who needs the Doc, not baby!
Baby cried a lot and went to sleep shortly afterwards as he was shocked, it is a normal reaction, he was probably very scared.
He will be fine.

loopylou6 · 15/12/2007 10:10

character... i think...

bumbly · 15/12/2007 10:10

keep thinking arou d eyes he is blue - but he alert as norm

got hubby to hug him straight awya so both dont get hung up over this....

i too think will keep an eye as simly don't think a&E would do anything since he not showing any "signs"

unless i am wrong....

what checks would they do that i can't do at home...anyone work in a&E???

loopylou6 · 15/12/2007 10:16

well when DD fell out of her chair and really banger her head, i took her straight to a&e and they checked her temp, looked into her eyes and sent me home with a head injury sheet

loopylou6 · 15/12/2007 10:17

banged not banger, i dont know what the hell is wrong with me this morning...

littleducks · 15/12/2007 10:23

Sounds fine, would keep an eye on him, bet you dont believe but babe will soon be getting himself into trouble.

Might be worth looking at cause of accident, was dh overtired or something in the way? or if it was just a freak accident dont worry.

I took dd as a baby to a and e in an ambulance following a car accident (bad enough to write off car but dh and i just had sore muscles and very minor whiplash injuries iyswim) and as dd had been in car seat all they did was normal obs (temp etc.) and then pulled dd from lying down to sitting from her arms gently to check if there was any pain in neck/back.

If you grow more worried through the day or lo develops any symptoms just go to put your mind at rest

puccaupunderthemistletoe · 15/12/2007 10:24

Bumbly....Almost exact same thing happened to us.

Dh tripped over the baby bouncer when ds was only 10 weeks old, fell on the elbow (onto laminate floor) which was holding ds, we went to A&E as i thought the baby must have got some of the impact even though it wasn't direct, he must have been jolted/shaken.

A&E just said to take him home, keep an eye on him, he was fine.

There is nothing they can do really, only observe for symptoms.

HTH

puccaupunderthemistletoe · 15/12/2007 10:25

Things to look out for....

Dazed, unresponsive
Vomiting
eyes not focusing (as they would normally)

LadyOfTheHollyAndTheIvy · 15/12/2007 10:25

Honestly, I think he will be fine.
You know how you sort of throw the baby up in the air a bit abouve your head to make them laugh?
I was doing that once with DS1 and i threw hi up into the door frame.
He smashed his head so hard I was scared to look, expecting to see blood everywhere.
I took him to A&E thinking his skull would be fractured and they would think I hurt him, but they didn't even xray him.
He was fine btw, but I honestly thought I had fractured his skull or he would die later and was in such a state when I got to the hosp.
He was fine btw.

SpawnChorus · 15/12/2007 10:51

Oh Ladyoftheholly - that must have been awful, but (with the hindsight that no harm was done) I couldn't help but lol...

Bumbly - I'm sure you're little one is fine. Babies are remarkably bouncy, and it doesn't sound like he got bumped badly.

LadyOfTheHollyAndTheIvy · 15/12/2007 11:34

I laughed afterwards Spawn, but I was absolutely bricking it at the time. I could not believe I hadn't fractured him!
I was like 'No really, he hit the frame REALLY hard. I mean the house shook!'

ConnorTraceptive · 15/12/2007 11:36

I rang NHS direct when this happened to me with ds. They will tell you what to look for and will know whether or not you should go to a&e.

bumbly · 15/12/2007 18:59

ok hubby was feeling really low so we went to a&E

after hours of waiting they looked into LO eyes and said he is ok

that is it

wanted to update everyone here as I always really appreciate the mumsnet tour de force

am in shock now and keep thinking is he really ok???

is Lo brain damaged? how will i know???

hubby is distraught in the living room and i told him to hug lo and carry him down stairs all tomorrow so he doesnt get hang up

LadyOfTheHollyAndTheIvy · 15/12/2007 19:03

So the docs have looked at him and you are still no more assured he is okay?
I dont know what else to say im afraid.

NAB3littlemonkeys · 15/12/2007 19:05

My son fell and banged the back of his head on a slide and when I mentioned he was blue around the eyes they wanted him straight to A&E. I would ring for advice.

bumbly · 15/12/2007 19:05

am medically inclined myslef and dont trust a junior doc - you know what i mean

one can still worry after!

OP posts:
LIZS · 15/12/2007 19:06

It must have been a great shock for you all Not what you need on top of everything else. It sounds as if dh cushioned the fall and any impact for ds so it is unlikely he'll have come to any serious harm . If he seems out of sorts go back to dr but he is more than likely fine now afetr an initial fright.
