Horrendous tooth pain

I have a large back tooth that is agony.
I went to the dentist with it 3 months ago. He took out the very old filling and x rayed it. He said there was nothing the matter with it and he was at a loss as to what to do. There are some fine cracks in the enamel. Eventually he decided to put some sort of steroid paste on it and a temporary dressing.
This has worked fine until Friday. It has ached all weekend and is getting worse. It seems to come and go. I could have hours of awful pain and then it will calm down. No idea what starts it off.
I also have two very sensitive teeth at the bottom which seem to have come out in sympathy. I don't know if they're connected. I also have lichen planus of the gums that I control with sensodyne toothpaste and gengigel.

I am going to the dentist at 2 but have no faith that he will know how to treat it. At the moment I am prepared to beg for him to take it out.
Any dentists about, or anyone have anything similar?
All suggestions gratefully received.

Hiya,

How did you get on? I'm currently having the same issue but the pain seems to be spread so I can't tell which tooth it actually is! It's so frustrating but like you the pain comes and goes but when it's here it's my whole jaw/ear/tooth very confusing!

That's what mine was like until last night. It was definitely coming from one tooth last night. The dentist took the tooth out this afternoon. The relief was enormous. He felt that the cracks in the enamel were causing the sensitivity and pain. I hope you get yours resolved soon. It's not at all nice.
