Heavy periods

Can the gp help with heavy periods? They are so awful but I don’t want a mirena (which was suggested to me last time) I don’t want any contraception, is there any alternative help for heavy periods? I dread it every month

I suffer with it too. Mirena didn't help. The only thing which is useful- period cup (moon cup). It doesn't solve the problem, only helps with heavy period.

Have you had a scan to check for fibroids and polyps? I have polyp and am hoping for op to get rid.

Oh no I haven’t been checked for that, I went to the gp a while ago but she was very dismissive and just suggested mirena which I don’t want so just been putting up with them

I was diagnosed by an neurologist by accident, with menorrhagia. I was routinely anaemic and flooding and chalk white and fainty every month. Prescribed tranexamic acid and mefenamic acid, I never took to the second (it's an NSAID and I'm not good with them) but the tranexamic has been close to a life saver: certainly a life returner.

To add more detail, I told my GP at the time about how awful the periods were and he said, blithely and blissfully, "try yoga."

I was seeing the neurologist for another issue and she noticed my white face, I apologised for being woozy as it was my period and she asked, "is it flooding, are you passing clots, is it wiping you out?" and didn't take long to send me for a blood test to check anaemia and a request for a prescription to my new GP! Don't give up and see lots of different doctors because it IS massively important you deserve proper healthcare.
