Bit worried about Dd2

She started off with a tickly cough last night. This always triggers her asthma and so she was awake nearly all night coughing and wheezing and being sick.

I took her to the docs today and she was represcribed her inhalers etc, which we started straight away.

She was fine for most of the day apart from the cough, but then around 4/5pm she went downhill, very tired, hot to touch but feeling cold.

She has been dosed up with Ibuprofen, and cough meds and has been in bed an hour now but have just been in to her and she is still shivering under a quilt, blanket and her dressing gown, plus she opened her eyes and looked at me but wouldn't speak, I asked her if she was ok and she just looked right through me. She is still hot to touch although not as much as earlier, and the whites of her eyes are very red and bloodshot.

Is there anything else I should do ??

I'd give her calpol aswell but we don't have any and I have no one who can get me any at this hour.

From everything you've said I think I'd be getting her checked out at A &E.

ChristmasShinySnowflakes · 14/12/2007 20:02

Have you checked her temperature?

ChipButty · 14/12/2007 20:03

Call the doctor out. It sounds like you are doing everything right, so try not to worry. xx

WeFrizYouaMerryChristmas · 14/12/2007 20:04

I'd go with the A&E option to be safe myself too.

nutcracker · 14/12/2007 20:04

Really ?

I can't check temp, bloody thermometer won't work. She defo isn't as hot as before I gave her the ibuprofen.

She may have just been half asleep when I spoke to her but not sure. Dd1 is in the next room and said she hasn't coughed once which is a bit odd as thats all she has done all day. Mind you she just had her inhalers again.

She sounds really unwell. Do you have a children's A and E anywhere near you or can you call out a GP? Failing that, could you afford one of the private doctor services to set your mind at rest?

ChristmasShinySnowflakes · 14/12/2007 20:08

I'm sure she'll be fine Nutty, but I'd air on the side of caution and get her checked out asap- sounds to me like she has a temperature and needs calpol to bring that down.

How old is she?

WeFrizYouaMerryChristmas · 14/12/2007 20:08

Really, I just don't like the sound of her not answering you/looking right through you...even if dd1 (4) is woken up here, she can muster a go away mum, or a moan unless she's really ill.

ChristmasShinySnowflakes · 14/12/2007 20:10

I agree.

A & E ASAP IMO.

CoteDAzur · 14/12/2007 20:10

How old is she?

You need to take her temperature. What is "very hot"? If she is anywhere near 39 C more than an hour after ibuprofen, you need to bring down her temperature somehow. Best would be paracetemol (calpol) every six hours along with ibuprofen every six hours (so one of the two every three hours). If you can't get paracetemol, rub down her legs, arms, and face with a wet towel. Repeat as necessary, until the six hours are past and you can give ibuprofen again.

By the way, paracetemol is better for use in children. Use ibuprofen only when fever persists with paracetemol.

Check on her regularly tonight & take her to the doctor again tomorrow. She might use antibiotics.

Good luck for tonight.

monkeybutler · 14/12/2007 20:11

I had exactly the same with DD last weekend but she had rash and wouldn't have lights on. Obviously I freaked out and went straight to hosp where they gave her iuprofen, stripped her and put a fan on her. They observed her for a couple of hours and discharged her when temp down. However, she is ill again the weekend, think it has mutated into an ear and chest infection. Nightmare. I would defo get her checked out, you can't be too careful.

nutcracker · 14/12/2007 20:18

Sorry, I was upstairs with her.

She has just manged to have a half normalish conversation with me, she is absolutly exhausted but said she can't drop off. She is cooler than before, and her previously freezing hands and feet and now nice and toasty.

I asked her if any part of her body hurts, specifically her neck or head and she said no, said she is just tired.

She has just dropped off again now.

I am not 100% sure that a&e is needed, perhaps I should ring NHS direct, or will they tell me to go a&e too ??

The thought of taking her out in the freezing cold just to be told she has a virus and temp is not tempting when she has only just got warm.

I sound like I don't care now but ykwim.

She is 8 by the way.

CoteDAzur · 14/12/2007 20:20

Don't you anybody at all who can bring you a temperature and some paracetemol?

nutcracker · 14/12/2007 20:22

I rang friend for thermometer but she doesn't have one and her hubby is out otherwise she'd have sent him for paracetamol.

Can't get hold of my dad either.

mumbear · 14/12/2007 20:23

At the end of the day none of us are docs. You know from being her mum if you are concerned about it. Why dont you just ring NHS direct, they have always been fantastic with me. At least then you can relax? x

nutcracker · 14/12/2007 20:23

I have had an awful cold all week so it is possible that it is that.

Am gonna go check her again.

OP posts:
wilbur · 14/12/2007 20:26

Nutcracker - v cold hands and feet while hot to the touch, then followed by suddenly being toasty warm all over is the sign of really quite a high temperature. It's a pattern that goes - you are boiling but feel cold in yourself and want blankets and then a little later you are really boiling and throw off all the covers. TBH, unless you can borrow a thermometer from someone to check her temp, I would at least call NHS Direct and see what they say. It is most likely a nasty virus with a high temp, but just in case it is a chest infection or ear infection, you should probably get it checked out.

nutcracker · 14/12/2007 20:28

Just checked her again and she is snoring her head off. I am going to ring nhs direct though now just to see what they think.

CoteDAzur · 14/12/2007 20:30

Do you have any Tylenol or Panadol in the house? They are also paracetemol (= acetaminophen). Inside, you should have the recommended dosage for your child. If not, look here for dosage calculation.

nutcracker · 14/12/2007 21:12

Right have spoken to NHS direct, by which point dd2 was sitting next to me chatting away, 100 times cooler than when I rang them

Have just put her back to bed, but she is alot better than when i first posted, thank god.

Thanks everyone

Another question though, but about me this time, I had 2 decongestent tablets at about 7pm, containing paracetamol, but my throat is still killing me, can I take 2 ibuprofen tabs too ??

OP posts:
loopylou6 · 14/12/2007 21:20

yes u can, glad dd is ok now

nutcracker · 14/12/2007 21:23

Thank you

We are supposed to be going to see Peter Pan tommroow afternoon, but at this rate me and dd will be in bed, and my mum will have to take ds and dd1 on her own.

ChristmasShinySnowflakes · 14/12/2007 21:24

Very pleased she's alright and hoping you feel lots better soon

nutcracker · 14/12/2007 21:28

Sorry meant to say that nhs direct said that as long as her temp doesn't shoot up again then it was fine to wait and see how she was in the morning, especially as she could hear her in the background chatting away to her toy dog lol.
