ds2 (just gone 3 and not potty trained yet for various reasons)has had 2 dirty nappies today, both times i have seen a little white thing on his skin(thigh sort of), but i cant see anything in the actual pooh, nor round his bum. this thing was not moving at all, was small, not even 1cm and white, like nappy white. looked like a little tube?

is it this do you think? is it doctors for us then? and what about me, im 23 wks pg.

i have read about the hygiene thing but i hoover every day, and dust alot (am monica-esque) so i guess i do a mini spring clean?i have just put all bedding/towels/dressing gowms on really hot wash, and hoovered their mattresses, and removed all teddies/cushions.

arrghh this is creeping me out more than head lice do.

the doctor is fitting me in at 4.50, will we get medicine or will they have to check somehow first?

It sounds like a worm! They are easier to get rid of than headlice - bitter experience - and your doctor should be able to advise on what you can take.

WeFrizYouaMerryChristmas · 14/12/2007 14:45

Sounds like a worm too ds will get that stuff from the chemists, but not sure you can whilst preggers, dr will advise thou, you may have to live with them for a few months

scorpio1 · 14/12/2007 14:47

a few months???

i think he must have got them from nursery, he goes two days a week whilst im at uni. i have to tell them too?

none of the children, or us, are scratching though. i guess it must be like you dont always itch with head lice, i suppose.

any other cleaning things i should do?

I agree you may have to wait for treatment - but the rest of the family should be treated asap. It is gross but really common. DD has had them 3 times now ( she is 8 yrs old).

Make sure they have separate handtowels and get them little nail brushes so they can really give their hands a good scrub after theyve been to the loo.

Good luck

scorpio1 · 14/12/2007 16:05

yep, it deffo is...have just seen more of them.

Vermox - two doses a few days apart - I think you need a prescription. In Ireland we get it at the pharmacy (nice!). it will sort them for you quickly.

scorpio1 · 14/12/2007 16:22

docs in half an hour, im sure they will give me something. thankyou for your help!

so we got our medicine. have been doing tons of handwashing etc.

what else shall i clean? have removed all teddies, damp dusted etc etc, wiped down doorframes, throughly cleaned bathroom/thrown away sponges etc. Anything else? how often shall i wash bedding whilst this is happening?

and ds2 did a poo today and there were about 15 [shudder] dead worms in it, and the first live one i have seen. we took med on friday. pharacist said its ok, but i thought it should be dead?

also im not allowed med (23 weeks pg), i have checked when going toilet and i dont appear to have any, no itching, but what can i do to help prevent it/stop them if i do have them?

Sorry for all questions!

tissy · 17/12/2007 15:59

just be meticulous with your hand-washing! Even if you have got them, you need to re-infect yourself with the egss before the grow, so as long as your hands are spotless, you should be fine.

FrannyandZooey · 17/12/2007 16:01

If you keep up the hygiene measures for 6 weeks to avoid the eggs getting back into your system, they will all be dead and you will be worm free

sorry to say they are very infectious and if LO has them you are quite likely to as well

FrannyandZooey · 17/12/2007 16:02

to add to tissy's post, you can also inhale them in dust! so you need to make sure house is clean and bedding washed, etc etc

wear tight pants in bed so you can't scratch your bottom directly (sorry TMI) and wash bottom area every morning immediately on rising

change sheets and hoover and damp dust daily

scorpio1 · 17/12/2007 16:04

thats what i thought franny, although doctor reluctant to give me medicine, said that study had showm some toxicity in rat babies/fetus'.

i am with ds2 all the time, surely i must have? [urrgghh].

even if i do, can they go on their own then with hygiene measures?

OP posts:
scorpio1 · 17/12/2007 16:05

X post.

Have been doing tight pants thing for everyone.

dust and hoover everyday anyway. didnt know about bedding everyday though, will do that now.

FrannyandZooey · 17/12/2007 16:08

yes i think your doctor is right, the medicine is quite heavy

if you keep up the hygiene measures so that it is impossible for you to get reinfected with eggs (either by hand to mouth, or by inhaling from air), then after 6 weeks all the worms currently in your system will be dead

that is 6 weeks of serious cleaning though

(I would just do my best and if I was not successful I would wait until the baby was born and take the medicine. Oh I don't know, can you take it while bf?)

FrannyandZooey · 17/12/2007 16:09

the eggs can get on the bedding I suppose? although perhaps not if you wear the pants? Just do what you feel is enough to sort it out - basic hygiene may be enough, or you may need to be more thorough

scorpio1 · 17/12/2007 16:10

it says no to bf as well, but i have never bf before and am not sure about this one either (please dont shoot me!).

as if i dont have enough to do!

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 17/12/2007 17:37

LOL no shooting but of course I will say why not give it a try

really sorry to hear about the worms, but try not to panic - most children do get them at some point and apparently a large percentage of people will have them at any one time, often without knowing about it, so you will in no way be alone with this!

Elibean · 17/12/2007 19:36

I was given Pripsen (the piperazine sort, not mebendazole) when 32 weeks pregnant, and we suspected dd1 might have them. My OB (v experienced and up to date) was fine with that, and I, being paranoid (worms and pregnancy didnt' help ) researched it all for weeks - seemed ok, and worth it, in the end.

I know hygiene alone is supposed to do the trick, but I was too freaked out by the thought of going into labour wormy and couldn't hack it - so took the Pripsen.

dd2 is fine, btw

Good luck, I still don't know whether we had them then or not but I'll never forget the exhaustion from the cleaning frenzy!

wishingchair · 18/12/2007 11:29

We're currently on the war path with this. I saw one little white thread on dd1 but more near her vagina that bottom. She had been complaining of an itchy bottom which is why I looked. We;ve all taken the meds and I keep looking in all our poo (except dh - I'll trust him to examine his own ) but not seen any sign of any others.

We take follow up dose on friday. I'm damp wiping daily, hand and nail scrubbing after going to loo and before eating, wearing pants and jamas to bed, all got own towels and changing sheets regularly. The instructions on the pripsen leaflet said change them regularly not daily. I can not change 3 beds and towels daily and work and keep up with all this bloody cleaning and normal laundry. On top of all this, my hoover has packed in. Waiting for new one to be delivered (can't go to shop to buy one as car is in garage)

So I'm guessing we may need another dose!!! Anyone know how soon you can dose yourself up again after the follow up dose?

scorpio1 · 18/12/2007 12:06

2 weeks with my ovex stuff.

thanks, it seems im doing everything ok.

nursery said he isnt allowed in, but doc (& nhs direct) said he is ok to go. he has no worms, dead or alive anymore. i had a big arguement with them, manager thought you could get them from animals and enquired of my cat!

OP posts:
scorpio1 · 18/12/2007 12:06

oh and franny i might just try!
