I've had tinnitus since I was a teenager.
I've learnt to zone out from it most of the time.

Timeisavirtue · 17/11/2021 22:42

I get it as a symptom of hypothyroidism.... when I first witnessed it I couldn’t focus, I was worried. I was 13 and in high school so not the greatest time. I just learned to ignore it and basically nowadays barely notice it. It helps more when you have noises around you, sitting in silence with it can sometimes be excruciating.

Try binaural beats for tinnitus on YouTube. It’s a lifesaver

MrsMeg1 · 17/11/2021 23:13

If you’ve had an ear infection it’s likely it will go or fade a great deal, don’t worry. You may have some fluid left in your ears or etd where the tubes are blocked. Try steam and masking the tinnitus where you can.
Is the sound constant?

Starrr123 · 17/11/2021 23:29

@PlasticPlantsDontDie has it got rid of your tinnutis?
I just listened to it then after i thought my ringing has stopped ! But it seemed abit quieter cx

My ears feel like they have alot of pressure! Keep popping and cracking alot . Along with the ringing! Im hoping it fades. I googled and people can have it for ever! And ut scares me so much.

I had tinnitus start out of the blue for no reason about 14months ago. I have it both ears and multiple noise. It does get easier to live with but the first few months can be difficult. I think I started getting better days from about 7 months on. Read the info on the British Tinnitus Association website. They also have a live web chat service in a week day if you need some support. I feel for you, it's very hard mentally to begin with but you'll learn how to manage it/ignore it better over time.

MrsMeg1 · 18/11/2021 08:14

With your other symptoms sounds like etd, your eustachian tubes regulate the pressure in the middle ear and they are probably blocked still hence the pressure and crackling. The negative pressure pulls the eardrum inwards too but all of this should slowly resolve over time.
Def try inhaling steam with some menthol in it for around 10 mins at a go. Could also ask the chemist about things like Actifed that may help but check suitable first.
I have tinnitus (result of a virus) and know how hard mentally it is at first, mine faded over the first few months and is now more of a hiss, in just one ear. Someone mentioned the BTA helpline & I would also say to give these a call for some support/advice.

I've had unilateral tinnitus for about 8 years now, woke up with it one morning and it never went.

Yours may well go away, it really depends on the case and whether any permanent damage has been caused. But even if it doesn't, your brain will very likely eventually acclimatise. I barely notice mine now, unless someone mentions tinnitus (thanks :)) and then I "tune into" it for a few minutes before I naturally ignore it again. Also, some days it is so high pitched that my brain is barely able to register it.

I absolutely understand the feelings of depression and fear about the condition when you initially get it - but please don't despair, if it doesn't go away, and even if your brain doesn't reprogramme itself entirely over time, there are ways to manage it - The British Tinnitus Association is a good starting point.
