Is this a dodgy mole??

I've been aware of this 'spot' on the back of my leg for a number of months. Since I had assumed it was just a spot or ingrown hair or something I had a pick of course and it did bleed a lot initially then scabbed over. But it hasn't gone away. It has just stayed there being scabby for months now. I'm afraid I just picked again - no blood this time but it looks a bit weird. Not sure the pic will be clear enough for anyone to judge it, but in case it is clear, what do people think??

It does look like an ingrown hair to me rather than a mole but the fact it’s been there for months is a bit weird.

A - asymmetric
B - blurred borders
C - mixed colours
D - diameter bigger than pencil
E - evolving

I think those are the criteria to look out for …. how do they relate?

Haggisfish3 · 17/11/2021 20:03

That definitely needs checking.

Managed a close up...the more I look, the less I like it

You should get it checked if you're concerned but it looks like a harmless dermatofibroma to me.

ATTA45 · 17/11/2021 20:18

@Magilix off to google that one...!

Should add I'm not medically qualified but have several of them myself.

Could this be a cherry hemanginoma?

@SophieJo

Could this be a cherry hemanginoma?
That was my first thought too. I have one very similar to that (doctor knew what it was straight away). I've had it for almost 20 years and it never changes.
Unreasonabubble · 17/11/2021 22:14

No does not look like it could cause any harm. Says she who has her moles mapped every year.

endofagain · 17/11/2021 22:17

I think any mole that you are worried about should be checked.

Unreasonabubble · 17/11/2021 22:34

@endofagain I wholeheartedly agree! My GP asked for photos (because they were not seeing patients) and that was not enough to reassure me so yet again this year I paid privately for mole mapping. I consider it well worth the money for my peace of mind.

It is the little inconspicuous things that always catch us out.

+1 for always getting moles checked, but one perhaps reassuring thing to add while you wait for an appointment... stuff you've picked (or had removed from) your legs always takes longer to heal than stuff elsewhere on your body according to my dermatologist. He's right too in relation to my body - stuff he takes off my face, including a BCC healed fast, stuff on my lower legs takes many (many) months. So it could have been a harmless something you picked and now looks a bit worse. But still get it checked.
