Anaemia- totally exhausted, breathless, signed off work, now having chest pains

My energy levels have been low for months but I put it down to being busy at home and work ...

In hindsight though, I was also getting bouts of nausea, some dizzy spells, and especially tired just before my periods. (I have endometriosis and adenomyosis)

Then felt awful mid Oct with the heavy cold that's been going round, during half term my daughters and husband both tested positive with covid and I started to get lots of the same symptoms as them. Fatigue, needing to nap during the day, severe headache above my eyes, body aches etc... but no positive pcr test.

By last Friday I was experiencing extreme breathlessness and exhaustion, even from climbing the stairs or trying to hold a phone conversation.

Phoned GP last Monday who felt it sounded like covid and sent me to urgent care centre red hub, oxygen levels, bp and blood sugars fine. Got sent on to A&E for chest x-ray, ECG and blood tests.

10 hrs later, I was told all fine except iron levels low, so came home at midnight with Ferrous Sulphate 200mg to take 3 times weekly, advised to book another blood test for 6 weeks' time, and also Tranexamic Acid to take during first 4 days of my period.

Phoned the GP to discuss the blood test results and they hadn't been sent through with my discharge results, so phoned the hospital to request a copy but they said they could only send to GP.

Had phone appointment with GP yesterday and he diagnosed Iron Deficiency Anaemia, said my ferritin level is 3 and my haemoglobin is 104.

He was going to prescribe Ferrous Fumerate but when I said A&E had given me Sulphate he said stick with that. Asked if anything else I can do to help symptoms or aid iron absorption etc, but he said no, everything else looks fine on bloods, just ferritin and hb so just take the tablets and rest, should start to see improvement in 2-3 weeks.

He's signed me off work for this week and next, as at the moment the most exertion can manage at a time is a 5 minute walk to school or hang up the washing etc, before I'm completely wiped out and have to sleep it off for an hour or two. If anyone phones me I always sound out of breath like I've seen rushing, even if I'm laid on the sofa.
In the last few days I've started to get more noticeable heart palpitations especially in the evenings, and tonight some quite sharp chest pains. Think another call to the GP may be needed tomorrow... any thoughts anyone please?

Any of this ring true for you? Any advice gratefully received... should I be asking for a copy of the blood test results? Am drinking a glass of orange juice or soluble multivitamin drink after the iron tablets, and trying to make all my meals iron rich with vit c too, but should I also be taking B12? vit D? Magnesium? Zinc? Anything else?

Thank you if you've read the whole of this post, it's taken me about an hour to write, that's how slowly my brain is working at the moment xx

Hi. Severe iron deficient anemia here. Sorry but your GP is talking rubbish, i get an infusion whenever my HB drops below 114 as I get all the symptoms you do. Tablets are useless and can take 8 weeks to work. Tell you GP you need this and if he refuses tell him you want it written in your notes that you have asked and the reason he has refused.

PrincessPaws · 17/11/2021 20:05

@Ayupmeduck1

Not to sound negative but from my experience, GP's lack knowledge in this area massively. I've been anaemic for most of my life on and off. I hope you have success with your GP of course but I just got frustrated with mine, hence paying privately to resolve the issue and feel I could function again! Dr Toby Richards who runs the Iron Clinic was fantastic explaining my blood test results - my levels began to effect my bone marrow. They might give you some free advice on the phone? This group is really helpful too:

www.facebook.com/groups/anemic/?ref=share

So you'd recommend the iron clinic? I started talking to them a couple of weeks ago and my medichek package came through today so I need to sort that appointment out. Although it's really expensive I'm willing to pay it to feel remotely normal again!
Chocolota · 17/11/2021 20:38

So the GP texted me this evening tk say he's checked the ECG from this afternoon and is happy it's normal. The blood test results from this morning will be back at the surgery tomorrow. I have booked a phone appointment with another GP on Friday afternoon to discuss what they show, so I'll ask her about referring me for a transfusion then and also about running checks on my B12 and folate as the ECG nurse advised me today. Thanks all for the info and support, it's a big help.

I have similar issue. Heavy periods and the dr gave me tranexamic tablets for periods. Waiting to see someone at hospital about it. I have been taking spa tone two sachets with a bit of orange juice. The tablets they give don't agree with everyone and in my case never absorbed them so didn't help. Spa tone is easier to digest but drs won't prescribe it, you'd need to buy it yourself but definitely would recommend it.

Ayupmeduck1 · 18/11/2021 11:48

@PrincessPaws yes I would recommend the iron clinic. It was really good service. It's not cheap, but I couldn't bear 1)feeling so shit 2) possibly feeling so shit for 8+ weeks on tablets that were wrecking my insides! I had to travel to London but I made a bit of a day of it, nice lunch out and had my infusion later in the day. I just feel GP's don't get anaemia and B12 deficiencies, cofactors needed for healing and how to properly rectify issues in the now and longer term.

Hi, yes I have used spatone, when i was expecting dd12. I know they were recommended my midwife as gentler and better absorbed. Not sure how many sachets I'd need to equal the 4 tablets I'm taking now though...

So, I've just had this update via text from the GP: Your haemoglobin has improved to 114 and Feritin improved to 27.

Your white cell count has risen though. I note you have a telephone appointment tomorrow with (other gp)... It may be worth you letting (her) know if you have any temperature symptoms tomorrow.

Sounds promising I guess, hb 104 to 114, and fer 3 to 27.... wbc though?

I haven't needed to sleep today but have still felt weak, unsteady and foggy. Thoughts anyone??

Fab, thanks. I think I'm going to go for it, 2 years of feeling awful has me at my limit!

bizarrustii · 18/11/2021 20:38

I wonder if you're coming down with something if your WBC are increased? May be worth a PCR to rule that out.

Chronicallymothering · 18/11/2021 20:42

Gosh my ferritin got as low as 7 and I felt at deaths door. I have no idea why they haven’t admitted you for an IV of Iron at 3. Especially with symptoms.

That was my thought - just did lft and it was negative. Ive been laying on the sofa most of the last week so not sure where I could have picked anything up tbh. Did a negative PCR on Sunday too.

Ugh I feel you.

I had HG at 103 and ferritin at 4 in July and started taking liquid iron plus changes to diet as the tablets make me feel rotten.

My latest results are HG 110 and ferritin 3.

My GP was very happy with this despite me saying how awful I'm feeling and that I'm struggling to function. He begrudgingly referred me to the hospital who have declined my request for an infusion.

Apparently ferritin doesn't matter, it's the HG that counts and as it's risen I'm on the right track. They won't help me to investigate why it's so low as apparently I have periods so it's to be expected Hmm

I've accepted a prescription of tablets just to try them again so will see if they help.

I have 2 kids under 4 and a chronically ill OH and could quite honestly spend the next year in bed.

I hope you get some relief soon

Squeezedtillipop · 19/11/2021 05:01

@Rageagainstthebing that’s crap. I’d see another Gp and if you are able, see the haematologist privately. Having periods should absolutely NOT give you a low ferritin so you need to get to the bottom of what’s causing it as well as treating it.

Chocolota · 19/11/2021 18:05

Last night, I had this update via text from the GP:

^Your haemoglobin has improved to 114 and Feritin improved to 27.

Your white cell count has risen though. I note you have a telephone appointment tomorrow with (other gp)... It may be worth you letting (her) know if you have any temperature symptoms tomorrow.^

Sounds promising I guess, hb risen 104 to 114, and fer 3 to 27....

I've picked up a printout of the results today, and can see the raised White Blood Count - Neutrophils high but Lymphocytes low.

Have tested for covid, lft negative. My temperature was normal last night and today. No idea why it should be high, am on my period, but not fighting any infection, don't feel like I'm coming down with anthing...

Spoke to the GP this afternoon and she said I should be feeling better now that my iron levels are improving.

I haven't needed to sleep quite so much today but have still felt breathless, weak, unsteady and foggy, and staff in the tesco local had to help me to the car yesterday when I became light headed and wobbly.

Doctor says she's had patients witb mucb lower iron levels not having this level of breathlessness etc ... all I can tell her is how I feel.

I requested that I get an appointment for B12, folate and vit d levels to be checked on blood test. She suggested also liver function test. Other than that I'll just keep resting and taking the iron I guess.

Thoughts anyone??

I know, I couldn't quite believe it till I read the prinout myself! Surprised I'm still feeling quite so breathless and light headed if its at that levels but I guess its early days.

You may have already mentioned it but have you had your thyroid function tested too?

Blackopal · 19/11/2021 18:49

Sorry to hear you're feeling so bad.

Heavy periods absolutely can cause this, please keep an eye on heavy periods as doctors can be dismissive.

I was admitted to hospital with HG levels of 43. I had to had several blood transfusions and have now had a hysterectomy.

If anyone is finding periods are getting heavier please press for investigation. I know how difficult this can be but mine were caused by fibroids and endometriosis and had strong consequences for me.

I hope you are all feeling better soon.

Hello, did these symptoms ever resolve for you after getting your iron levels up?
