Help! Can I chose a different kind of anaesthetic just before sugery?

Due to have a small op under local tomorrow. I've had it before and it was excruciatingly painful. I'm really scared it will be as bad this time.

If I talk to the surgeon again tomorrow is there any chance that they will change the type of anaesthetic? Or will it just be too late and I need to consign myself to extreme pain again?

Poor you. Of course you can. Ask to speak to the anaesthetist. Good luck.

Did you post earlier about having a loop recorder removed and previous inadequate local for the insertion?

If it’s a list that’s allocated an anaesthetist and you’ve been prepared pre-op for sedation/GA then it may be possible to change. If it’s a proper local list without the above then it’s less likely. You can always decline to have the procedure if you prefer.

If you are the person who’s had the difficult time with local (apol’s if you’re not!), there are lots of reasons that local may not work as well as hoped but having had one bad experience though doesn’t necessarily mean it would happen again - the person doing the procedure, with insight to what happened last time, may be able to make things easier this time. HTH (from an anaesthetist)

Probably not.
You will need to be re listed for a general anaesthetic if the list you are on is for locals only. They tend to run local lists and anaesthetic lists separately as you do not need an anethatist anywhere near a local list.

So it’s highly unlikely that they will be able to squeeze you in as anaesthetic lists are tightly scheduled often months/years in advance.
If of course you are meaning a general anaesthetic rather than a local?

ConfusedBoobs · 15/11/2021 18:05

@Greybeardy yes, I'm the loop recorder person. I'm worried because they don't seem to know or believe what went wrong last time so they can't change anything this time.

I also need the recorder removing quickly because they think I have cancerous clarifications behind it. They have to remove it first so they can do the biopsy.

I'm just worried that pulling out the recorder isn't something that can be stopped half way through if it is really painful.

Talk to the anaesthetist. They are used to people who don't respond to particular anaesthetics or are allergic to one.

ConfusedBoobs · 15/11/2021 19:32

I'm not sure you even get an anaesthetist with local. The surgeon does it all? But I will try asking again. Worse comes to worse it's 5 minuites of severe pain. It won't kill me will it? Just so hard to stay still when you feel like your dying

There probably won’t be an anaesthetist there, they don’t attend local anaesthetic lists. It’s usually just the surgeon.
So there won’t be an anaesthetist to ask.

I suspect you won't be able to change as you haven't been preassessed as such.
However express your concerns first thing in the morning and see what they say. And also if you are uncomfortable during the procedure do say and be very clear if it's intolerable. They should be able to do more injections for you at the time. You should expect to feel some pressure or pulling but hopefully not too much pain.
Best wishes OP.

ConfusedBoobs · 15/11/2021 22:43

I think they said there would be no pain only pressure last time. There very definitely was an awful lot of pain though. I think they might have fitted it too deep? I've spent all night in tears over doing it again but I know I don't have a choice.
