Persistent Ear infection?

I posted last week about being in agony with an ear infection In agony with ear infection

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/general_health/4397631-in-agony-with-ear-infection

Since then I've seen my GP and got prescribed a 7 day course of antibiotics (Amoxicillin)
My last day of the course is tomorrow and although the pain has improved it is still lingering. I'm still taking paracetamol twice a day which admittedly is an improvement to every 4 hours but still....
When I've had a chest infection previously all the negative symptoms had gone before I'd even finished the course of antibiotics. I know a chest and ear infection are two different things but still....
Is it worth me re contacting my gp surgery or giving it time to finish healing on its own. I'm terrified of it getting worse as the pain was unbearable whereas now the pain is a lot more tolerable

Do you have antibiotic ear drops?

Motherhippo · 15/11/2021 22:00

@Suzi888 I started off with antibiotic eardrops but they didn't work and the infection just got worse. I was then prescribed oral antibiotics

I’d possibly go back to G.P- I ended up in hospital on a drip as the bone behind my ear began to swell, I was dizzy and vomiting. The pain was horrendous. I had mine vacuumed in hospital by the specialist after the infection had burst. I was deaf for a good few weeks, but hearing eventually came back.
If the pain has eased off then maybe the infection is clearing up, they would need to look in your ear really.
How do you feel today?

Fellow ear pain sufferer here OP! , if you are still in pain the I'd call the GP back, if the infection hasnt cleared and you finish the antibiotics the infection will possibly just return. You might need a second course to clear it up properly

My DH has a perforated eardrum and has had ear infection recently. The nurse took a swab to determine what infection is was either fungal or bacterial, then he was given antibiotic ear drops for bacterial infection which helped but as soon as he stopped them the pain and discharge started again. The ear drops which helps him the most are called Cilodex which a private doctor prescribed after getting his ears cleaned.

I've had lot of paracetamol this morning as there still is pain in the ear similar to niggly toothache. Not unbearable but still not pleasant.
I will give the GP a call and see what they say. I'm hoping that maybe a second course of antibiotics will clear it up completely and that there isn't anything more serious going on. When I last saw the GP she couldn't see inside the ear as it was blocked.
Thanks for all the advice good people

At the risk of being accused of being an ignorant witch doctor, homeopathy can be very effective for ear infections. My DD was treated once for an ear infection and has never had another one. I'm in France where it's not scoffed at.

Purplewithred · 16/11/2021 12:14

I went through 2 x antibiotic eardrops, a week of amoxicillin, two weeks of ciprofloxacin before my ear infection decided to start to recede. It's finally gone, but I strongly suspect has left me with a perforated eardrum.

If you are a curious sporner you might want to invest in an ear micro camera - mine is from amazon and is amazing. I will never put anything in my ear ever again (other than the camera). An ear blocked with infection gunk is a pretty revolting sight, be warned.

Just had a video call with the GP. They are concerned as their is still lingering pain and it is still look red and swollen.
However because I'm pregnant treatment options are limited 😭 😭 😭
Awaiting a call back from the GP as they're going to refer to the ENT for advice
I really hope I'm not stuck with a bad ear until I'm done with my pregnancy. Im only 25 weeks so it's a long road ahead if that is the case
