WHY DO MW'S ASK IF YOU HAVE PAINS IN LEGS POST BIRTH??? I HAVE PAIN

I have developed severe pain in my thigh today, all I have done is walk to nursery and back and it was a toddle more than a walk as 2yr old DD2 walked the whole way.

Is there something to be concerned about or is it just likely to be a strained muscle?

Aren't they concerned about your pelvis moving abck properly rather than anything else? Don't really know though! I have dreadful lower back/pelvic pain but I put that down to carrying ten ton tessy dd aged 2 around the place!

Hope you feel better - can you use deep heat if bf? Stinks to b*ggery but it works!

coldtits · 13/12/2007 22:29

is there any swelling or heat or redness?

DanJARMouse · 13/12/2007 22:31

no, its perfectly normal, just bloody sore! Cant put much weight on that leg, but its ok when im sat down. Just muscular then....

They're concerned about a thrombosis/ blood clot.

Is your leg hot where it hurts?

susiecutiemincepies · 13/12/2007 22:37

Concern is for DVT you are at greater risk ante-natally and for a short time post natally.

If your thight is red, swollen, hotter to the touch at all, then this is a sign of DVT. Any , or all of those symptoms may be present.

Measure around the thigh at the fullest point, and then the 'good' thigh. If there is a difference, AND any of the above signs or symptoms, call your GP.

IF you develop any chest pain, or shortness of breath at all, go to A& E and tell them you had this pain in your thigh and that you are post partum.

If none of that is going on, please dont panic, but if you are still sore tomorrow, see if you can have it looked at anyway

ps. WHY do all my posts end up double spaced?????

frostythesnowmum · 13/12/2007 22:42

Only way to rule out dvt is to scan because pg is high risk you should qualify - see gp tommorrow and you should be seen by s specialist clot nurse within 48 hrs. Try not to worry though it is still more likely to be a trivial soft tissue problem.

slim22 · 13/12/2007 22:45

I also think it's to scan for DVT.
If you are still in pain, tell your Dr.

smartiejake · 13/12/2007 23:31

Know this might seem like a silly question but did you have an injection for pain relief in your thigh during birth?
I remember having alot of pain in my leg about 2 weeks after birth of dd2 at the site of injection.

DanJARMouse · 14/12/2007 07:25

nope no pain relief injection... think im going to go to docs this morning, its REALLY sore now!

Still no red patches or swelling and isnt hot, just sore!!!

Hope all goes well with GP - very wise to get it checked out.
DVT's usually start in the calf, as the veins there are smaller than the thigh, and if this is the case pain is usually noticed in the calf first. However, this is not mutually exclusive so you are deffo doing the right thing by getting the gp to look at it.
Let us know how you get on?

DanJARMouse · 14/12/2007 15:29

asi thought - strained muscle. Feeling a lot better this afternoon.
