I have had a painful breast for a few weeks, but left it a week or to before getting it checked out,as I thought it might go away on its own.Anyway,I saw the Dr today & she examined me & said that it was probably hormonal. She said my breasts felt quite lumpy, but that was possibly due to the fact that my period started yesterday. She said that pain was a good sign,to take painkillers & go back the week following my next period, for her to recheck me.

I check myself regularly for lumps ect & haven't noticed anything suspect, but now I'm panicking in case I haven't checked myself properly in the past & have missed something.I've never found a lump & hadn't even noticed that they felt lumpier than usual before my appointment,so perhaps I'm not checking myself properly?

Is this normal procedure,to leave it for a month? If she was really concerned about anything, would she have sent me of for further investigations?

Sorry for all the questions, but it has freaked me out a bit.

Thanks in advance for any help.

i had this last week!was told hormonal and told to take evening primrose oil and painkillers.feel ok now but was very worried.id never had breast examination before and was petrified!i asked on here about it and it seemed its not unusual.

ArmadilloDaMan · 13/12/2007 19:16

If she was really concerned she wouldn't be waiting a month to check it out she would have referred you straight away to check, even if she wasn't quite sure.

AFAIR there are many things that can cause lumps in breasts. You should always check it out, but dr will refer you straight away if they have any worries or doubts.

Are you under 40, FuriousG? Breastcancer in this age group is very rare, whereas lumpy breasts are quite common

loopylou6 · 13/12/2007 20:14

FG dont worry, you probably havent noticed your boobs feeling lumpy becasue u check yourself regulary and are used to them, so therefore u dont notice anything different, my boobs are incredibly lumpy, i thought it was normal, i once got sent to a breast specialist because iw as convinced i could feel a lump that shouldnt be there and the gp referred me for peace of mind and im sure i remember her telling me that i have lumpy boobs and its normal

sounds like mastitis to me

Yes,I'm under 40-just!

Thanks SO much everyone.I feel an awful lot better about it now after hearing about your experiences.I suppose I shouldn't be surprised,my mum has a history of lumpy breasts & has had several ops because of them. They have always been fine though.

Moljam, does the Evening Primrose oil help?I was afraid to hug my girls last week because my boobs hurt so much!I might give it a try.

Bloody boobs-it weouldn't be so bad if they were impressive, but they are so small that I don't really need to wear a bra.Why do they have to hurt as well?
