Glasses - at what stage do I insist that the optician gives me new ones?

Got new glasses a month or so ago - they are very nice, from specsavers. Varifocals so I only need one pair. Happy with them.

Except they are uncomfortable on my nose - they leave a red mark on either side of my nose and are starting to actually rub.

I have been back to specsavers twice and told them, each time they disappeared into the back with my glasses, came out again and handed them over saying "you won't have any more problems with them " well I am having problems with them!

So... I will give them another chance, but at what stage (if at all) do I say calmly and politely that they fitted the bloody things and if they don't fit, tis their fault and they should cough up for a brand new pair?

or am I deluding myself that this is possible?

i would go back now and say you want new ones

SquonkaClaus · 13/12/2007 16:41

are they likely to give me new ones though?

They cost me £94 and that was using my NHS voucher!

Glasses should never, ever leave a mark, you shouldn't be able to feel your glasses on your face or behind your ears. Insist you are re-fitted. Involve the manager if they try to fob you off.

Sorry to hear about your problem. I had exactly the same thing happen to me.

I had some very old Oliver Peoples glasses that were extremely comfortable if a little old fashioned which cost me several hundred pounds about 10 years ago. When they broke I couldn't get them fixed anywhere because the fittings are different. So in desperation I bought a new pair from Specsavers who happened to have a 2 for the price of 1 offer - I can't remember what they cost but the 2 were cheaper than my original pair. The minute I had paid for them, the receptionist miraculously found a spare part for my OP glasses and repaired them. The Specsavers glasses are really really uncomfortable in comparison - one pair I can't see through properly, the focus is all wrong and the other pair hurts my nose. I also went back twice to have them adjusted but to no avail.

Guess what? I've gone back to the original pair so the small repair has cost me over £200 and I now have 2 pairs I can't wear.

I have learned my lesson that cheap opticians are a false economy. I think the Specsavers glasses are not good quality.

thank you.

I'll pluck up courage on Saturday and give them another go. I'll let them have another go at fixing them first, because I do like them. If that fails, I shall get all hands on hips and wagging forefinger ish.

alexandre - I've only been wearing glasses a couple of years (this is only my second pair) I didn't realise specsavers were cheap! I thought they were just handy!

If you don't have any joy, I'd return them and ask for a refund. You might be better off with an independent local optician - would agree that Specsavers not great quality.

SquonkaClaus · 13/12/2007 17:10

yes, I did go from plastic to metal frames, they were fine when I first tried them on - it's only with wearing them all the time that I've noticed a problem and behind my ears were fine until you mentioned it!!!

Dp told me he doesn't need the car tomorrow so I will go and see what specsavers say tomorrow.

That glasses direct link looks fab - I will dig out my prescription and have a nosey at that. Ta

Squonkaclaus - no you're right, "cheap" is not the right word - I think what I meant is not good value for money. The original pair were bought at central London prices ie very expensive but better value for money when you take comfort into account!

chipmonkey · 15/12/2007 18:09

Go back now and ask for the manager. Explain that you do not want this pair adjusted again, you want a different frame or a refund. The reason they don't want to do this is because Varifocals are expensive to replace but that is not your fault. ( I am an optometrist btw) I wouldn't agree that all specsavers frames are rubbish, they do have some good bargains but regardless of price, they should fit well. And don't get a pair online either, especislly not with Varifocals which need to be centred very accurately, you should try them on and have them checked by a dispensing optician before taking them home.
