Ds has been ill since tuesday (i think), he has a temp, runny nose and a wicked cough.

He has been very tired and def not himself at all. He smells a bit chemically too.

Anyway, i am giving him the max dose of any meds i can but his temp is coming straight back up as soon as the meds wear off.

Shouldn't his temp be going back to normal by now ???

If he is still hot in a bit i'll give them a ring.

Well he has just woken up again and seems to be a bit brighterand isn't quite as hot either.

Think i'll just keep an eye on him and see how he is later on.

Thanks Yorkie

badger clinic, nutty?

I don't think 4 days is excessive - hope it is tapering off now, anyway and he is much better later.

I phoned NHS direct when my dd was like this and saw a doctor within an hour and half at a harmony clinic where they sent me. Marvellous service IMO

Dd had a viral thing recently with a temperature that went on for almost a week and swollen glands. Hope he feels better soon!

nailpolish · 13/11/2004 14:55

give nhs direct a ring. usually a high temp and runny nose is a virus and the the temp will stay as long as the virus, but best to be sure. dont worry about giving him meds, thats what they are for! try tepid sponging etc too if temp high before meds are due. how old is your ds?

nutcracker · 13/11/2004 16:04

Thanks all

Ds is 23mths. He seems to be slightly better, has had a bannana and some water and is now asleep again. He isn't as hot either so hopefully he will start to improve alot more tommorow, if not it will be off to the badger clinic (an out of hours gp thingy at local hospital).

Dd2 has been off school all week with the ame thing and is now finally better so it looks like a week is about the length of time i can expect him to be ill.

Just an extra note about high temperatures - if he has a temp strip him off to a vest, don't be tempted to cover him in a blanket or snuggle him to you too much as then he is fighting the heat caused by that as well as his viral infection. Try putting a fan in the room too to bring the room temp down, open the window slightly and turn the heating down a bit. You have to strike the balance between a a high temp and a chill of course but these things weren't necessarily obvious to me when my son had a high temp last year and when the doc pointed out that cuddling him was making him hotter I thought "of course"!!

Hope he gets well soon.

Just to let you all know that Dp ended up rushing Ds up to the childrens hospital last night because we couldn't control his temp and he seemed to be struggling a bit when breathing.

I had an agonising 4 hour wait at home, until dp returned with a remarkably different Ds.

The doctors agreed his temp was very high and started him on medicene straight away, he also had a nasty dose of croup (hence the difficulty breathing) and so he was given some more meds which were steriods i think.
They were going to keep him in cos his temp did at first go up again but then thankfully it came right down.
He was sent home with a preloaded syringe of the steroid stuff which we had to give him today, and he is soooooooo much better i can't quite believe the transformation.
His temp has remained down and his cough is loads better, the croup has almost completely dissapeared.

Hopefully in the next few days he will be back to his normal self, and we can all catch up on sleep before the next cold comes along .
