I've found a lump in my neck

Initially I thought it was just a swollen gland because I had a cold, but it didn't go. I booked a doctors appointment and was seen in September. The GP thought it was thyroid related and nothing sinister but sent me for a scan and bloods to confirm it.
On Monday I had a call to say I had a scan booked for the next day. So I went to the scan and the doctor was very nice and seemed to be doing a thorough check. He then casually told me it was a 'benign leukaemia and he would sent the report to my GP within 24/48 hours and they would contact me with the next steps'.
I just don't know what to do?! I know they said benign but my mind is working on overdrive thinking the absolute worst. I have 2 beautiful little babies and I can't stop crying when I look at them.
I know I can't change anything and I've just got to wait. I've had really bad health anxiety since DS was born in January. I don't even know what I want out of posting this? Just feeling a bit lost and unsure.

Firstly, Thanks & Brew for you @1teaandchocolate .

I have lymphoma, and - although I know nothing about benign leukaemia- I didn't want to read and run.

You should pop onto the cancer thread - lots of people waiting for results. Will find the link...

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 10/11/2021 09:38

here it is. Good luck!

Thank you so much!!

Sounds quite the diagnosis to make based on purely an ultrasound scan. Did he take a biopsy or do any blood tests?

Sarahlou63 · 10/11/2021 09:49

Could you have misheard? A benign thyroid or lymph nodule would make much more sense.

1teaandchocolate · 10/11/2021 10:03

@EnrouteNOTonroute I think that's why I'm so shocked. I have had bloods done and he said something about more test but my GP will get contact. He spent a while going all over my neck. No biopsies we're taken. Would that be the next step?

@Sarahlou63 he definitely said benign leukaemia. Which I couldn't make sense of either. He said something about nodes but I couldn't take it in

That's strange. I've had - and still have - benign thyroid nodules and they will always do a fine needle aspiration to check the nodule(s) for cancer cells; it's simply not possible to tell from a scan whether it's benign or cancerous (99% of the time it's the former).

Tempusfudgeit · 10/11/2021 10:17

Could he have said leukocytes but due to your health anxiety you heard leukaemia?

1teaandchocolate · 10/11/2021 10:24

Thank you for the information! I'm so confused and uneducated on this. I tried to google it last night but got all worked up and thought I should probably wait to speak to a doctor.. I wish I had questioned him more at the time I was just shocked when he said it.
So it looks like a biopsy will be be on the cards for info!
I hope you're ok!

@Tempusfudgeit he may well have said it.
I feel so stupid now, I could have sworn he had said 'benign leukaemia' but it doesn't make sense

@1teaandchocolate focus on the word benign.
Try to not google anything until you've had a clearly talk with your doctor and you are clearly what you are dealing with.

My husband had a lump on his neck and it was diagnosed as non Hodgkins Lymphoma but only after they’d done a needle biopsy for confirmation. That was in September 2014 & it was obviously a very scary time for both of us. He had chemo & is now completely well, some 7 years later. So even with a scary diagnosis there is hope & treatment.

However it does sound like you may have misheard what the doctor said. Hopefully you’ll find out some more information soon to reassure you that it’s not as bad as you think it is.

Twoweekcruise · 10/11/2021 10:55

I wonder of he means Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia?
My mum was diagnosed 16 Years ago with this, at first we thought her world had caved in but it isn’t as awful as it sounds, in fact mum has so far never needed any treatment in those 16 years, she has 6 monthly blood tests to check it. She is on the CEV list because of Covid.
There are many CLL support groups on places like FB.
Are you able to make an emergency appointment to see or speak to someone in your practice today?
I hope you get some answers soon, there is nothing worse than being left hanging, the NHS is getting terrible for that.
Two years ago after a simple ultrasound scan I had a phone call from the CT scan department to say a renal oncologist had ordered a urgent ct scan that I needed done that day. No one offered me any advise other than they had found something on my kidney. Three weeks it took before someone called me to say it was a kidney cyst! I was in pieces and just felt like a number.

Hi OP could he have said benign Lipoma? This is something very common just a fatty deposit on the neck and harmless.

Tempusfudgeit · 10/11/2021 18:40

Lipoma sounds very likely, OP.

NinetyNineRedBalloonsGoBy · 10/11/2021 18:51

Yes I was going to say the same OP I'd bet my house he said "benign lipoma". You don't get scary diagnoses at a scan, only once the scan has been analysed along with bloods etc etc and then it's with a doctor not the scan person.

Flyingbymypants · 10/11/2021 19:03

You can't diagnose leukaemia on an ultrasound scan. His is far more likely to have said benign lymph node or lipoma. Really try not to worry.

1teaandchocolate · 10/11/2021 19:13

Thank you all for your comments! They're appreciated!!
I contacted my GP, spoke to the receptionist who said my doctor has wrote on it 'benign thyroid nodules' I asked about what I was told (or what I thought I was told) and she said it's definitely benign thyroid nodules and I didn't need a biopsy because they could apparently tell from the ultrasound scan.
Apparently I only need to contact them if it grows or I have any further issues... and that's it
