DH's blood pressure is sky high

DH is 50 and a bit overweight (as am I, we do try) but is otherwise a fit and active person - always on the go, very busy and physically strong.

He's so quite a tense angry person, has been as long as I've known him - when he's super tense he complains of headaches and a jittery sensation in his chest. He's been to the GP for it in the past, had some beta blockers but declared them useless and stopped taking them. He does drink alcohol - up to 6 units, 4 or 5 nights out of 7, but doesn't binge drink and doesn't smoke. Diet not great obviously but we walk a lot together.

I'd had a couple of slightly raised blood pressure readings recently so I invested in a UK approved home blood pressure monitor to keep track of it for a while. On a whim I laughingly suggested that we do his, as he's not had it measured by a doctor for about 10 years - the first reading was 205/120, which I assumed had to be an error! Left it 3 mins and did it again, it was 190/110.

I've been fairly cool about it with him and just suggested we try it in the morning when we've just woken up, when you should do it, but that reading is through the roof surely? He says he has a headache and I'm trying to keep him relaxed, but he's never really been able to - he doesn't sleep well either.

I don't want to scare him, he hates anything medical. I suggested if it's still high over the next few mornings I'll make him an appointment, and he has accepted that, but for certain he will scoff at any suggestion that it might be important.

Can a reading so crazily high be a one off?

Good outcome @Carbuncula. I hope he takes his meds.

NotMyCat · 13/11/2021 02:27

@Carbuncula take the side effects leaflet off him! That's what I did when I was struggling with anxiety, I gave it to a friend in case we did need to check anything bit it stopped me looking at it and obsessing over the smallest thing
Because if you get a headache you panic and think it's the meds, but I had to think "actually I've drunk 7 mugs of tea and no water, you're an idiot, drink some water!"

DH has essential hypertension. He always had headaches and they got really bad and then the blood pressure was diagnosed.

It's totally controlled by lisinoprol and another one I can't remember (possibly amitripaline?) and he has no obvious side effects. Has been for about 10 years now.

It may well be nothing to worry about if he just gets on the right meds. As pp said the problem is the damage it can do if left untreated.

Aria999 · 13/11/2021 02:43

My bad, amilodipine

The headaches stopped as soon as he started meds so I do not believe they had nothing to do with the blood pressure

Carbuncula · 13/11/2021 05:39

I asked what the reading was and he said the top reading was over 200, couldn't remember the bottom one. But he's started on 2.5mg Ramipril - took his first one last night at bedtime.

He slept badly (couple of hours in total) but that isn't that unusual for him - he has something else happening today so it could have been that keeping him awake, plus he partly "looking for" side effects, of which there were none even after a first dose.

He says his anxious/tense feelings are completely absent this morning, which is odd considering his lack of sleep - maybe his permanent feeling of being anxious/on edge IS connected to blood pressure after all, who knows. He definitely describes it as a physical sensation more than a mental one.

I'm so relieved that he's on some medication now.

He needs checking for other cardiovascular disease risk factors too. Has he had bloods for lipids and glucose? Massively important.
An ECG?

Carbuncula · 13/11/2021 09:13

Bloods for a full panel taken yesterday, appt for BP check and ECG in 2 weeks. They couldn't do the ECG yesterday, not sure why.

When I discovered I had very high blood pressure my GP sent me to the pharmacy with my prescription and told me to take it before I left the premises. That lead to years of trying to get it under control. We've finally come to a cocktail of 3 different tablets to stabilise it.

Good to see update, my DH is on Ramipril 2.5 mg, hasn’t had any side effects from it. They wouldn’t have done an ecg at first appointment as it takes about 15/29 minutes to get readings.
