5 weeks of being poorly- tips

7 replies

Hit me with your wellness tips, folks. After 5 weeks of bugs, colds, a fractured arm and 2 eye infections (and 2 sets of antibiotics) and a mammoth cold sore, I'm fed up of being poorly.

I already take multivitamins and have been taking a tonic for the last week. Broken arm stil aches and that rules out most exercise atm.

What else can I do?

Rest? Grin

@lilcolibri

Rest? Grin
Been trying to do that- afternoon naps are now a mainstay on my weekends and have slept in spare room a couple of nights this week, to avoid husband's snoring!

Double the tonic to twice a day until things improve. I also found taking a short, brisk walk and doing some basic stretching (as much as you can with your arm!) helped.

Thanks @MattDamon- will give that a twirl too.

Poor you!

Daylight and fresh air are my number one recommendations. You've probably been stuck indoors for almost all of the last five weeks. Wrap up well in layers of comfortable clothes and get outside for twenty minutes.

Lots of veg, fruit and meat/fish for light, easily digested meals that don't take a great deal of effort to prepare - I'm a huge fan of homemade soup; essentially, cook the veg of your choice plus a potato, blitz up in decent stock (there's probably a good case for buying some tubs of fancy bone broth rather than just a standard cube, if only because it tastes nicer), and add some fresh herbs. Or hot chicken stock, Miso if you like it, rice noodles and some frozen veg/chopped spring onions thrown in - I add some prawns and chilli flakes with a pinch of sesame seeds and/or toasted sesame oil.

Something that makes me feel as though I'm doing something good is fresh ginger tea, which is just grated or sliced and bashed ginger root steeped in boiling water. If you're still feeling snotty/sinus pain, you can add slices of citrus fruits to it and some mango juice if you want something less acidic without adding honey; knock up a jugful at the beginning of the day and just add more hot water/extra bits as the day goes on.

Lots of warm water - baths or showers (if you're still in a cast, get a protector cover) and gentle swimming/floating around in a pool feel nice and help you gently move your arm, hand, wrist and fingers without hurting it.

Other than that, soft socks or fake Ugg style footwear indoors, having peaceful times (for naps or just being quiet after the effort of being outside, etc) and generally slowing down from your normal pace, but doing short periods of activity punctuated by short rests.

@neverdropyourmooncup- thanks so much. You're right- I've been inside a lot over the last few weeks, so will follow your advice and that of @mattdamon and get some fresh air.

Lysine for the cold sore. Take a tablet every day - I have not had one since I started taking them and used to get loads.

Gentle walks and stretches for the broken arm (I am an expert on this having broken mine several times).
