Any dentists around?

My dentist advised me to get a mouth guard for my lower jaw to stop teeth grinding. I had a mould taken and picked it up a few days ago – £275. I told the dentist it felt uncomfortable. I know it's going to feel strange at first but it pushes my teeth out of their normal bite position if you see what I mean. One side of the guard doesn't press right down right over my back teeth and it seems raised – only my upper back teeth on one side make contact with the lower teeth when I'm wearing it. The minute I relax, my mouth falls slightly open.
The dentist brushed off my concerns and told me to try it out and come back in 2 weeks. She said if it's not doing it's job (i.e. my teeth aren't healing), she'll refer me, to a consultant – but surely there won't be any improvement after just 2 weeks? I feel like she's trying to cover up the fact she's messed up and it doesn't fit properly.
My question is, should the guard fit like a glove? I know it will be tight, but it shouldn't alter my bite, right? And I shouldn't have to sleep with my mouth open?

Or you don’t have to be a dentist… anyone with knowledge of a dental mouth guard?!

I had one made for me in March - I had it adjusted twice before we agreed it was comfortable and fit properly. I had two specific appts to adjust it, I didn't pay any extra for these

@TankFlyBoss Thanks, how did your dentist adjust it? Did it have to be sent away with a new mould or can they make changes more easily than that?

He did it with a hand held electric filer sort of thing with a very small head. So we kept putting it in and taking it out of my mouth and then he would file a bit more until it was comfortable and he was satisfied with the fit. I actually went and did that twice. The mouth guard was very expensive so I felt justified in asking. It didn't have to be sent away.

Yes, you’re right. Really expensive so I feel really fed up that my dentist didn’t seem concerned that the fit was bad. Thanks for the info!
