I feel like such a naughty girl

I have just been turned away from having a coil fitted because I have been relying on lactational amenorrhea for contraception for the last 12 weeks. Given a little bag of condoms and another appointment in 4 weeks time with a pregnancy test! I suppose they have to have their policies but 99.5% reliable sounds good to me especially compared to a bottle feeding mother relying on the 96% reliable condoms. have now started feeling sick though in the car on the way home. surely psycosomatic. - oh dear maybe I should get a home test before the doctor can say I told you so.

really should have at least been more careful in the last two weeks - I thought they might be funny about it. (a me a midwife - slapped wrists)

anyway just wanted to rant really - anyone you know got pregnant this way?

Hmmm.. do you REALLY want me to answer that question??????????

Nettee · 12/12/2007 10:57

If you exclusively breast feeding (especially if you are doing night feeds) and it is less than 6 months since the baby was born and you have not had a period then you should not get pregnant - 99.5% effective. - probably spelt wrong though sorry

Cod- think it is when your Af stops whilste you are bfeeding

robinpud · 12/12/2007 10:59

Yup- plenty. Get a stick and do the honourable thing..

hoxtonchick · 12/12/2007 10:59

you ovulate before your period returns.... (actually, my period didn't return until months after i'd stopped breastfeeding in both cases. but i had the same experience as you when i went for my coil fitting 6 weeks after dd was born. i wasn't pg though.).

LaCerbiatta · 12/12/2007 11:00

Is it 99.5% reliable??? Didn't know about that... Are you sure?

The first think my mw told me after dd was born was: don't rely on it! it'svery common to have pregnant ladies at the 6 week check!

dirtygertiefromnumber30 · 12/12/2007 11:01

my friend got pregnant when her ds was 2 months old and exclusively breastfed.

how old is yor lo?

Nettee · 12/12/2007 11:01

well you say that icod but have they given top ups? have they started solid food? is the baby sleeping through the night? is it more than 6 months. The GP came up with a recent example from her practice to scare me nicely but how many people get pregnant using condoms or miss a pill or get pregnant with a coil in - it all comes to the same thing really. It is a dependency on medical intervention being more effective than natural methods despite evidence that they are as effective or more so

here is my link with evidence - will have to sue kelly mom if i am pregnant! mind you it does say 98 -99.5 % so it is not as good as I said

Nettee · 12/12/2007 11:08

my lo is 12 weeks old - I was beginning to get a bit nervous about it to be honest but still well within the 6 month limit.

FGs don't believe what it says on the blardy internet. Statistics can be tweisted to show anything.
If you think you might be pregnant, then you need to test.

rudolphdoesntneedbratnav · 12/12/2007 11:10

Er, this happened to me, hence the 15 month gap between DDs

Well there is not much point in testing for another fortnight of being very good. And if I am pregnant then I will have another lovely baby and it won't be the end of the world - but honestly I have read research papers on this during my training and it is effective - not that we (midwives) tell anyone this because we are all so paranoid.

Nettee · 12/12/2007 11:14

will look pretty silly thought if I am

Happened to me too - 14 month gap between mine. I hasten to add that we wanted two children close together, were intentionally not using any form of contraception and were delighted to find out I was pg so soon (if a little surprised!).

wardrobemistressakasugarfree · 12/12/2007 11:15

The statistics don't mean much-you either are or aren't.If you are happy either way that's really great.
